venusia...
i like the second option caffeine suggested...
i'd like grey cashmere sweater with sparkly jwlry...
i'd like to see a blk round or open toe ankle strap heel...
i guess silver works as well....

caffeine..i wouldn't say it was 'backwards'...
but i do think you need to alternate more the 'types' of purchases you're making...

add some basics...
then add some more statement pieces...
then more basics...and so on...

this way you always stay fresh and current in your wardrobe...
and you are building on what you have...

imo...

Venusia, I looove your skirt ... ^_^

Caffeine, I don't think there's really a wrong way to build a wardrobe if what you have is working. I know some people say, you must shop for basics before shopping for the fun stuff!!! If I did that, I wouldn't *have* any fun stuff B)

So I do the reverse ... I shop for my key pieces early, and then I build around them with what I have, and with new basics, shopping for those last on the theory that they will be easier to find later in the season (which btw is still near the beginning from most people's perspective) than statement pieces. Until I have the statement pieces, I don't know what basics I really need to make that season's wardrobe work. I also have a goal to each season find a basic piece I need to make items already in my wardrobe work/work better.

I don't really have an LBD, for example, and furthermore never have. Only recently did I find a decent pair of black pants to replace the ones I wore out some time ago (and I found them when I wasn't really looking). Basics are a great idea, but maintaining the perfect basic wardrobe at all times is nerve-wracking, takes more patience than I have, and may be impossible, esp if you have any fit challenges.

All that to say, I don't really think there's anything wrong with what you're doing. It helps to have a goal in mind, otherwise I'd probably never be able to stick with it long enough to find those elusive pieces.

I actually find it amusing to see what can't-live-without pieces I actually can live without B)

I totally agree :) If you shop for only basics, your closet will be pretty boring until you have all the basics, and I know it could take a while. I generally just buy what I like and dont buy basics unless I have a specific outfit that I need it for :)

yeah I am trying to change the combo a little...but I found myself buying statement pieces first and then looking for basics...well, the result should be the same

and you made the same arguments :D

What do you think for a semicasual work holiday party?
I am not sure that it isn't too busy with the neckline of the red shirt and the black beads/sequins/embroidery on the side of the black wrap shirt
PS. It looks odd because I'm bending over to get in the shot.

Yasmin the look on the left works for me.Red lace is normally a beeeeeeeeg no-no to me,but if you keep it to a tiny bit,as you've done here, and keep the rest simple, then that's great:)

my first question...

here it is:
how do I wear a charcoal v-neck sweather (very thin merino wool) with a white shirt unerneath and have the whole thing look edgy? I was thinking torn jeans and black work-style boots, but it still looks too "good girl" or "private school uniform".

Any suggestions on the bottom/accessories/make-up?
I really like the sweather with the shirt, but the private school uniform look is not really mine...

tia!:flower:

^ A white shirt as in an oxford (collared)? Thanks!

Yasmin - I actually prefer the look on the right :p I think this is the first time I've ever disagreed with Quirk  My reason being that even though it's a holiday party, I still think off the shoulder is a bit risque for a work gig. I guess it depends on the type of work you do, though. If it's normally pretty open as far as attire, then you're probably okay, but if your dress code is normally business attire, then I'd cover up ;) I'm a bit conscious of looking like I'm trying to climb the corporate ladder the wrong way, can you tell?? :D

:D

yes, sorry. It doesn't have buttons, but it has the collar.

As for Yasmin, I prefer the first look, but you know if you can get away with bare shoulders in your work environment.

Hm so maybe what you're saying is I should find another shirt to go with the black wrap shirt, and save the black sweater/red lace for a non-work event? :) I am going to try to find some other "festivy" shirts in my wardrobe that might work with the black wrap....

hey, what would you think about having the "underneath" shirt in one of the so-called "jewel tones": deep, emerald green, sapphire blue, or a deep garnet red, or burgundi, something not as bright as red? I would think a nice blue could look really good!

Yasmin, I prefer the look on the left too ... and I think it looks perfectly innocent for a party ;) I would probably prefer the wrap sweater if shown with a different top because I really like it. You're right that it's a bit busy with the floral lace and floral beading. Silver charmeuse would be pretty under it ...

I just bought this top and its so far from what I usually wear that I have no clue what to wear it with...I sort of lived in workout clothes lately and im loosing touch...any ideas?

Hey this top would be awesome with a shiny black bubble skirt! The length and the fit would may it a really flattering look. The color is alittle dull but if you wanna dress it up do black tights and red, croc, t-strap pumps..I know it sounds alittle Dorothy but trust me...;)

I have hot pink shoes and I don't know what to wear it with. I was thinking maybe all black ( black top with skirt or pants) with these shoes and jewelery to compliment it.

ELLE_ME, I reckon this top would look nice with black cuffed, tailored shorts, a chunky necklace and pretty red flats.

UberMcQueen, I think black skinny jeans/pants with a basic white singlet or loose-ish t-shirt and a denim waistcoat would look great with those shoes.

Let me know if you have any advice, suggestion, or ideas

I like the third look.....its fresh and not tooo "put together"
