What news are you reading? - Must read rules, in Post #1

I thought it would be a good idea to share news that we read, we thought might be interesting, and moving (enough) to share with the rest of tfs-ers ...
After all a forum is about sharing opinions and ideas, talking about it, and discovering new ideas, new perspectives ...
This one is follows other threads that try to expend Fashion to other fields (fashion doesnt grow in Fashion, only - our lives neither).

Let's not just post them, one after another (I hate this, here ... people post photos or lists, and we barely discuss them ... boring ... zzzz that works in what would you wear today, but not really in what TV shows are you watching, or outfits look-alike...).

Also, there are hundreds of threads and possibilities in subforums for you to post about Fashion, so let's not post about direct-Fashion-related-subjects in HERE. Expending to other fields can mean anything: Lifestyle to Science, IT, Environment, Animal Rights, High Tech, Food, Drinks, "Faits divers", teen issues, serial killers (Mods ??) etc. (we also have threads about art, so maybe not too much about this, unless it is something maybe not worth a thread over there - for instance we don't post much about dance/ballet, why not post stuff here).


I guess you can post a few links by posts, but maybe insert links (instead of post the whole thing in a quote) if you do so - exception might be if the paper's title is, for instance, misleading ...
Post a small extract if you don't post the whole thing.


Let's go and share what's catched our attention in Today's and yesterday's news (we can share archives, I guess) ...from ALL OVER THE WORLD

My first is about NYC gentrification
- I've been one who's really interested into this subject. I read real-estate supplement of NYT, only for that ! and i love doing it. it might come from a small love for geography, frontiers and migration, and globalization and stuff like that - so anything you have about this in bookmarks, for instance, i would love to read. And I've been reading about people migrating from Brooklyn to Queens (or New Jersey) for months, now. So ... If you think about moving to NYC, and don't have much money you might take these in consideration ... They seem to be good options ... for young 30s, though, I would say.

We (us evil awful moderators that you secretly love ) actually discussed ages ago opening free and ongoing chat threads like this to liven the place up, so thank you BerlinRocks for taking some initiative to get some chatter/conversation going.

We did add a few rules, but mostly just made clear what you said

oh no i don't hate mods. i think it's a hard-work !!
not to be too private, but i've been asked several times to be one, and refused because this was too much time-taking (chronophage? "time-eating". is it only French?).
and especially now ; i feel like the numbers of mods have reduced.

anyway.

if you think this thread is interesting (nobody posted... there's been (only?) 300 views. or more. so nobody cares?), i was thinking there's could be a place, too, where people could be "critics" ...... on several fashion system fields (FW, design, spectacle, 'production' -there's a word i cannot remember-, press, ...).
but like seriously (maybe somewhere else than entertainment spot) with at least, let's say 500-800 words ... So there's more depth in the writing and ideas.
People express themselves pretty much here, and openly ! sometimes being not politically correct, at all.
some of the good ideas/posts sometimes get lost between other's people posts (that is why i gave up tFS hor a while - and it was also a social-media break for me - but still...).

i feel people have some stuff to say, and probably want to carry on in fashion industry. so since we have photographers, designers people posting their works. and in the magazine thread some people trying the styling exercize. why not expend this to 'WRITE (about) FASHION"...


and because nobody reads everything, there'll be a place where people (from industry - and that's where you'll see if this forum has some sort of a real impact) could read tFS-ers' opinions and "style".
and it can be like a work application training. almost. but not only.
if you like writing, and have stuff to say (but have no goals of writing for real, and a career) you can do write too.
sort of a carte-blanche to tfs-ers to write. as if they write for the New Yorker, or NYT...

thus people can give their opinion about the writings.
blogs exist, but sometimes it lacks the confort of a closer-feeling (does it make sense?) that we can get on a forum - especially this one.

I know it's not about NYC but when it comes to gentrification, do you have an opinion on what's happening in Paris with "La Jeune Rue" ? The following article is a few weeks old but it's a good explanation of the project and some of the questions it raises.

Yes I've heard about this...
But I haven't lived in Paris for more than one year, and what my father once told me when I was kid seems to be become more and more real: the museification of Paris (in his mouth it meant the death of the 'Real (Modern) Paris' - the right mix of popular and bourgeoisie - to which we now have to add the "Dubai-ification" (after Disney-ification of NYC, for instance) of big metropoles.
It is not only to open shops and malls (malls number is btw decreasing in USA, and a lot are getting abandonned), but erase the evolution of an area (the Marais, from poor people to jews to gay land to chinatown), into a "false" touristic idea of what Paris should be, and what this area should be, too ...
(Like in Dubai's malls, where they opened French restaurants or coffee franchises to "recreate" a romantic view of Paris and so the shoppers can experience their shoppings a certain way - the French way).
Le Marais, btw, is the favorite parisian spots for tourists from all countries ! (any foreign person I've met looove the Marais, and is perhaps the only thing they know with the Eiffel Tower and Montmartre ...).



That's what La Jeune Rue looks like to me. The first "public" step in the future of Paris, with its only goal being to appeal to tourists, foreign rich entrepreneurs/real-estate magnates, etc. Paris is no longer the city of Parisians and Provinciaux who made Paris (just look at the number of French owners in Paris' Palaces ... I think there's only one French palace left, among them all).

Sociologues and specialists say that in 2050 Paris will be divided between the very rich and the very poors (social cases) ... ie: to its form before Haussmann, with very poors living on the Faubourgs, and rich in hotel particuliers ...

The muséification of Paris... I'm not from Paris and would be a tourist there myself so I see what you mean. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

I think it's not that easy for people to post in this thread because most of the news we read have, to some degree, an economic/political aspect to it.

You might think you are doing a simple crime podcast, simply presenting the facts. And then you become a sensation, as Serial has, and the story falls to the mercy of the thousands, even millions, of bored and curious people on the internet.

I enjoyed following Sarah Koenig's storytelling of the case (I think the listeners who are following it as a criminal investigation instead of a story are missing the point). It was especially interesting to learn a bit about the proceedings of a trial in the U.S..
Still, many things about this podcast and its success bothered me considering it deals with the lives of real people. For this reason I'm glad they announced that the second season of Serial would focus on a non-criminal story.

Our global environment has many problems. If the high volume of carbon emission is one, the low level of intellectual engagement with some of the major environmental challenges is surely another. There are, of course, many engaging and well-researched studies of particular environmental problems such as global warming, and we have good reason to be appreciative of that. And yet some of the foundational issues have remained unresolved—indeed, unaddressed.

I would like to comment on two quite different, but ultimately related, areas of neglected environmental analyses that demand immediate attention. The first is the general problem of not having anything like an overall normative framework, involving ethics as well as science, that could serve as the basis of debates and discussions on policy recommendations.
