Why do tFSers like to congratulate each other on their purchases?

I'm not sure if this is the appropriate spot for this, but here goes. :innocent:

I've been wondering for a long time:

Why to us (as TFSers) congratulate someone when they make a purchase? I've seen dozens and dozens of posts congratulating someone when they purchase something - usually of a high monetary value? Why is that a reason to congratulate someone? Maybe I'm dense and though I’m happy for them, I think saying “congratulations” is a bit much. Is there a rationale for it; something I’m missing? :(

Maybe because it's something that the buyer really wanted or the saved up a long time for it. There is probably no one reason for it, it's just a way of being nice, I suppose.

That's why I like TFS. Unlike a lot of other forums, people are very supportive of each other and take the time to say things like congrats, thanks, have a great day and so on. ^_^

Well if you've ever saved up for something you love and finally gotten it then you know the feeling of accomplishment once you actually obtain the item.

Everything is subjective... and it's not for someone to judge whether something is significant enough to be congratulated for or not. Like Jessy said, tFS is a supportive community and it is, after all, a fashion forum so naturally we congratulate eachother on coveted purchases.
:flower:

I guess that's usually my reasoning for congratulations. Or if they've won the item on eBay or something.

cause we all live vicariously through each other's purchases :p

Thanks ladies! I hope I didn’t step on anyone's toes with the question  Maybe I need to go and congratulate someone now! :flower:

I'd congratulate anyone who was so excited about something, from an A on a school project to a new handbag. :p I think that's probably why people congratulate people with a purchase. If someone's excited about something, people are happy for them. :flower: That's the impression that I get.

^ I completely agree. That's also why I congratulate people. But I also get the impression that TFS is a very supportive forum, so it might be why this happens here more often than on other forums perhaps :flower:

In some cases, perhaps the reason is that we know the item is limited, so even though they paid for it, they are one of the few (and in some cases the only one) to own whatever it is ;) There you have the reason I would say it ... ^_^

But I agree, now that you mention it, it does seem a teensy bit odd

People don't tell me 'congratulations' when I buy something from Target, so I think it's something to do with purchasing expensive, high fashion items. I myself rarely say "congratulations" regardless of what the item is; I've found that saying "great purchase" or "nice use of your money " works just as well.

^ But they probably would if you snagged a rare Simply Vera Wang item (like the sought-after gold skirt), or a rare Go! item, etc. Sometimes there is actual shopping skill involved, perhaps also a valid reason for congratulation :p Sometimes luck is involved as well :flower:

I remember there were several tFSers who snagged designer H&M items that were sold out immediately--I was impressed :p

^ I see your point, and I have noticed that in the Simply Vera Wang thread on certain items. Still, I think every item purchased is a success in some form or another. But that's what sets me apart from most tFS members, I suppose!

By the way, was that gold Vera Wang skirt rare? I saw several at my local store and didn't give it a second glance.

^ I don't know if rare is quite the right word, but I believe it was only at selected locations, and I remember several tFSers were looking for it.

moved this to the shopping forum......

I must agree with the OP...

I have questioned this before, and frankly I think it is odd behavior, consumerism at its best. It makes me think of the first guy to buy the iPhone, 40 something years old and said it was "the greatest accomplishment of my life".

Buying something is not an accomplishment. If you have money, you can do it...anyone can.

I think it's just about saying to someone: that's a great choice...it's just a compliment really.

theoretically, yes. But if Beyonce bought some tacky LV logo bags she wouldn't get any congrats from our members, I suppose :p It takes efforts to find items that fit one's life style and personal style and yes, often times they are accomplishments :flower:

It may seem a little silly but I think there is a point to it. Not everybody can simply get what they want; they have to wait, save for it, search, save some more etc. To the everyday consumer, it's actually kind of a chore to get the item you really want! So when you do finally get it, the feeling is really awesome, and the fact that you got it before it sold out or went away is also another cool thing about it. I think a simple congrats is in order.

But I also don't believe "congrats" should only be saved for something as huge as having a baby or winning the lottery.

^no definitely not!! and shopping is always a good feeling too, and when u get what u really want it's even better. plus, for most people who have to work for their money it's also a thing of awarding oneself - u had to work hard to be able to buy it and u reward yourself, which is important too....
