Some close ups from an exhibit of costumes from Elizabeth the Golden Age:

Costume designer Alexandra Byrne returns to a familiar role, having designed the costumes for Cate Blanchett in the original Film Elizabeth. Byrne explains, "The benefit of doing the first film meant that I already knew the period very well, having done the necessary research for Elizabeth. In a way, that allowed me more freedom to look at the period more tangentially this time, to read more about Elizabeth, as opposed to just looking at reference material. Alexandra Byrne has earned Academy Award nominations for 3 of her films, Elizabeth, Hamlet & Finding Neverland.

I had read many times a costume designer will design a look but it doesn't mean designing a garment from scratch^.. Often times it is borrowed. I wonder about the case here..

I love how costume design and fashion design are so influenced by each other. I did a paper on this for my last yr at college and I found this website called The Costumer's Guide to Movie Costumes, it's a really useful site that has many recent movie costumes and peeks at upcoming films with beautiful costumes. one of my favs is Lemony Snickets, soo beautiful.

i found this site through The Padawan's Guide - a great place for Star Wars costumes :P

I love this thread!

^Thanks for the link! That's an amazing resource!

Here's a few of my favorites...

2046 (William Cheung Suk Ping)

Atonement (Jacqueline Durran)

Marie Antoinette (Mileno Canonera)

Memoirs of a Geisha (Colleen Atwood)

Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace (Trisha Biggar)

And this definitely doesn't count, but Cardcaptor Sakura (CLAMP)

ahh, I love historical fashion and movie costumes. What fascinates me the most is that the looks the characters are wearing in the film always fit the situation. I wish I knew what's going to happen during the day in the morning, so I could be the same.

that's an interesting idea ^ yes today i was off to work and was glad my feet stayed dry through the whole day though usually that does not happen. it was because of my newly bought woolly socks

ilaughead i think the Star Wars ones were wonderful --There's definitely an oriental vibe.. Especially with the queen or princess in red, with her hair raised up by poles.. I actually don't watch Star Wars so I don't know what she was  but the photo I saw was great

that reminds me, i often see movies where i perhaps don't care at all about the movie at first but i am really hopeful to watching it because of the costumes... Up on my list I would like to watch "Doubt" starring Meryl Streep:heart:

It's much better in the trailer.. There's a sheen and crispness to the wool in her clothes. And it floats.. I love it

Irulan, I feel the same way, it's amazing how back then they had a specific outfit for almost every activity whether it's sports or something fancy, and yet they always managed to look so stylish! I kinda wish we live in a time like that.
