African designer Lamine Kouyate arrived from his "Funkin Fashion Factory" in the outskirts of Paris this week to put on a fun, unique runway show. The collection, called Xuly Bet, was filled with Kouyate's signature thrift-shop finds which he alters and reworks until they are completely reinvented into his own special style. Visible seams are sewn together using a type of stitching which is usually employed on the inside of a garment to keep seams from unraveling. The result is both functional and decorative, much like Scott Barry's collections in the 70's. The most fun part of Kouyate's collection is his love of the kids and his love of street style. He printed huge, metallic, signature labels from the "Funkin Fashion Factory" on men's pinstripe suits found in thrift shops. He turned a potpourri of hand-macramed and hand-crocheted afghans into gowns, skirts and sweaters. His African roots mixed with Parisian streetstyle influences combine for a fascinating collection. Kouyate combined spikey high-heels and a skin-tight, see-through nylon dress with a big old hand-knit wooly scarf and hat. He always charms us as he does his own thing, unaffected by industry trend- mongers.
