Y/Project F/W 2017.18 Paris

Overdesigned wannabe so-called conceptual fashion student 1st year style collection.

^ I tried to say that out loud really fast, and failed. ESL. :meow:

I actually don't think it's that bad in terms of creativity and the work into each look.. pretty much everything in the last post is fun to inspect and there are some pieces that I'm sure would look beautiful on someone, and I'm also sure "beautiful" is not what they were after but there's a future larger than a Purple editorial for some of it.. that brown dress for instance, who makes brown dresses, in that material, with that weight, and when do they ever work or look remotely good on anyone.. that's talent right there..

My main complaint is that it's so goddamn trendy, these newer generations from Antwerp trip so hard on the legacy and get so self-conscious about expectations that they embrace whatever is up for grabs hoping to be a part of a movement greater than themselves.. and the result is inevitably so contrived and devoid of.. soul, and sincerity. Glenn's own line promised some much needed independence in fashion and could've become something to look forward in Paris.. instead he's designing under a dead person's parameters just like everyone else and for no good reason since we're not talking about an ancient house, and tagging along like a sheep in the "ironic" approach to design just the Russian/Georgian guys (who understandably are into it a few years later), like he doesn't know any better, and he does- his own line looked far more relevant than any of this.

In short it's a nice selection of the kind of items that you try to hide asap 2 years later when a friend opens your closet. "I was really into it at the time" "oh that's not mine" "it was a present" "it's actually really comfortable".

The only thing that comes to my mind while seeing this is "EWWWW".

So not refined and so untalented-CSM-try-hard-student.

"Après-garde" here...it´s like avant-garde turned generic.

I have to agree; Glenn Martens solo presentations were really great and a talent to watch for sure. I know he is a talented designer with great inspirations, ideas about shapes, details, atmosphere...but Y-Project is just the epitome of "trying to be Vêtements" brands. I prefer the Y-Projects from 2 years ago than now.

this was my favorite paris show ^_^. i found so many of the others disappointing, tbh!

To be perfectly honest, I think they should have just folded Y/Project when it's founder Yohan Serfaty died. He did the kind of clothes (mostly menswear) that would sit alongside Rick Owens, Carol Christian Poell or Boris Bidjan Saberi. It's a very specific niche of the market and since this guy took over, it's been remade completely. This bears absolutely no resemblance whatsoever with what happened there before him! If whoever backs the label felt the need to continue, they should have just named it 'Glenn Martens' and start anew.
