Y/Project Menswear F/W 2022.23 Paris

I am waiting for the day when designers stop copying Gaultier's prints. I don't think I will live long enough to see this.

This is really good re-edition of Gaultier past collections. Out of all the designers that recently inspired by JPG he is the only one that executed the clothes really well. Yes it's very literal but at least it's fun.

But if this is the indication of his direction for the couture collection next week then I won't get my hope up for him to come up with something fresh. JPG is so versatile as a designer, he done everything but it's seem like everybody just focus of his "enfant terrible" era and forget that he also has that subtle elegant and bourgois side that rarely inspired people.

I know everyone is raving about the JPG pieces (which is kinda meh for me anyway) but I much prefer Glenn's modern twists on classic tailoring and outerwear here.

I want to like him more than I actually do.

He’s too narrow minded and too obsessed with twisting and torturing “normal clothes.” We’ve seen far too many topsy turvy parkas and jeans and tshirts.

If he could free himself from the self imposed chains to street references and try for something a bit more elegant and refined, I bet he could come up with something interesting.

^Yeah, I actually see him reaching (very slowly...) towards something more adult and moving away from overtly trendy clothes. We saw a glimmer of that with the dress he made for the Elbaz homage.

I hope he can one day fulfill his true potential. I hope fashion doesn’t show him the door before that happens…

^ I mean.. it’s not like he’s trying to move upwards.. this is a designer that started out with a promising eponymous label that was mature, elegant and exciting to see. Guess he felt that was not cool or ‘zeitgeist’ enough, cause this is clearly where he wants to be and where he’s admittedly found validation and success.. designing a ssense s*it show with gimmicky, Yeezy, fits-all-sizes styling under a label someone else created. He’s now been doing this much longer than that brief start that could’ve grown and actually contributed to his field instead of this disposable stuff you’d only feel compelled to buy so you can prove your ~passion for fashion~.. it’s so trendy it doesn’t even expire 6 months later, it expires while you’re still wearing it, for the first time..
