YSL "Opium" Fragrance : Karen Elson by Mert & Marcus

There's just something about it I dont like. I think Karen looks gorgeous but it just looks badly finished, I dont know why. Maybe it's the quality of the image rather then the actual ad, but something just doesnt look right.

Amazing as the two previous campaigns(Malgosia & Mariacarla)..but waht's going on?They've changed the campaign frequently(3 times in a period of 4 years).I rememberes the Mariacarla ne only ran than less a year...:ninja:

i think it is an update on Kate Moss Opium ad back in the early 90's:

YSL-Opium-Kate-Moss.jpg

& the original ad. with Jerry Hall in 1977:

since when Fabien Baron is the creative director for YSL Beaute? this new to me?

& I agree the on the way she is handling the giant new Opium bottle, she could focus more on the pose of the opium effect/mode?

the new bottle is nice but I still prefer the original Opium plastic bottle.

I love Opium .. adore its oriental/chypre character & how it is still mystrious & timeless...

saw the billboards today ...

pretty much like it !!!!

wearing Opium (for men), today ....

i almost said its a great ad save for the scented salamander wording..then i read that its a watermark..lol
That said its fierce..she looks like a vampire queen!

The billboard ad is slightly darker and "enhanced" and it looks like they photoshopped Karen Elson to look like Sigrid Agren.

Compared to Kate, Jerry & Sophie's, this falls flat.

but I think it's better than the one with Malgosia (oh boring) and the 2006 Kate Moss one.
Mariacarla was good. but not enough "oriental" to me ...

This one is perfect. But I, indeed, don't understand why she's like drinking the bottle ... Opium is not something you drink ......... !
(btw always heard the worst alcoholic drink perfume ... maybe the new Opium Girl is an alcoholic .... lol)

A properly transgessive Opium ad would have given us the suggestion of smoking, instead of resorting to the more mundane sin of alcoholism.

And a visual indication of smoking-incense-scent would be more sensually evocative than the idea of someone drinking perfume, which just seems rancid to me.

Hmmm...I like it as an image, but it just lacks that spark that Opium ads should have.

Plus, I don't think Karen really looks like herself...if I didn't know it was Karen, I would have honestly guessed Ali Stephens!

to follow taz post, here are the others Opium print ad ...
with Kate, Mariacarla, Linda, Malgosia, Natalia, Ruper Everet ?

the Kate one was (unfortunately) released by the times of the Kate's drug affair (or was this ad just an excuse to spread tons of fake ad with the forbidden word ?) ....

here are some tv campains :
by David Lynch : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nni-CGgHlZE
with Linda : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lhDa8Cfhw4w + http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6hIvwv0Tuug
with Natalia : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGx5KuqagQo
unknwn director and model : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hu4mAV1JBEI

You'll notice that the Linda commercial is located in China (the bottle of Opium is inspired by the inro (?) - a box in which samourais put their opium), while the Karen's ad is very arabic inspired ...

I almost feel bad comparing Karen's to Sophie's. This is a nice ad, better than most - but there's just no comparison between the two. THAT was a perfume campaign.

Although I don't particularly think that Karen's pales in comparison to the others that much. It's not the best, but it does have something special...

I find Malgosia's the weakest....mostly because of the inane overproduction. And after that, Linda's - for a few reasons - one being that she is the least decadent, seemingly if nothing less, of all models, another being the barren 90s styling.
