All Things Considered, January 7, 2002 · NPR's Nick Spicer reports from Paris that fashion designer Yves St. Laurent announced his retirement Monday from the world of haute couture. The 65-year old St. Laurent, who dressed women in pants when proper ladies wore dresses, said his goal had always been to give women confidence and "accompany them" in their movement for liberation.

Robert Siegel talks with Linda Schwartz, who teaches smoking cessation classes in Washington, D.C., about what smoking that much might indicate about a person, and whether it's any tougher for such a person to quit, than for a lighter smoker.

YSL discusses his views on fashion
More than any other single fashion designer, Yves Saint Laurent is responsible for informing the way that modern women and men dress. Born in French Algeria in 1936, he came to Paris at age 17 after winning third prize in a prestigious fashion competition. He attended fashion school for a time and soon came to the attention of the great French designer Christian Dior, who was impressed with Saint Laurent's superb drawing ability. He became Dior's most trusted assistant, and when the latter died in 1957 Saint Laurent became—at age 21—head of one of the most famous fashion houses in the world. His first Dior collection was a triumph and in the late 1950s he popularized such styles as the chic beatnik look. After a break with Dior, he set up his own couture house in 1961. In 1966, he introduced the first female tuxedo—a scandal at the time but now regarded as a turning point in women's fashion. That year he also became the first major designer to open a ready-to-wear boutique. Saint Laurent made it acceptable for women to wear trousers and was also the first designer to use transparent materials. In 1983, a retrospective of his work was held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

Before I upload more photos, can someone explain to me how attachments work? I mean, how much storage am I allowed? Is there a better way to show photos (without cutting into my alloted storage)? Sorry to bother, but the FAQs are so sparse.

I'm planning to scan YSL photos from books and do screen caps from DVDs, so trying to plan ahead!:shock:

I think the best way is to upload stuff/photos to a Photobucket account. Then you can copy and pasted the html/url link into the post. When you hit the button with the mountain...another screen pops up, and post the link there.

I haven't seen any, but I'll keep looking. You can also read _Debut_, the book documents the same event.:flower:
