Paris Fashion Week’s Edgiest New Model Was Scouted at an Ariana Grande Concert
OCTOBER 4, 2017 2:55 PM by JANELLE OKWODU
On the runway and off, Zoe Louis cuts an impressive figure. The 5-foot-10 model with striking features reminiscent of late-’90s models like Kirsten Owen and An Oost just spent her debut season working for some of the most daring creators in the world. But although she was capable of pulling off those wild Demna Gvasalia money prints at Balenciaga and Virgil Abloh’s voluminous Off-White tulle dresses, Louis isn’t the edgy fashion insider she might appear to be. Scouted a year ago while rocking out to “Break Free” at an Ariana Grande concert, she’s more all-American girl than austere muse. “I was always sort of a tomboy—I wasn’t into fashion until recently,” she says. “I ran cross-country and track and love being outdoors!”
Raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Louis grew up immersed in athletics and recreational pursuits like swimming and hiking. “It’s fun living so close to the Great Lakes,” she says. Leaving it all behind to head into the chaos of fashion month was tough, especially as it meant taking time off from school. “It was a big decision,” admits Louis, who viewed the chance as an opportunity to see the world. “When I started this season, I had no idea what was in store for me.”
What followed was a selective yet high-profile run that started with a turn at Victoria Beckham in New York. Louis then appeared in Shayne Oliver’s debut at Helmut Lang, joined the lineup of swans at Giambattista Valli, and strutted in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower at Saint Laurent, an experience she considers a highlight. “The energy backstage was incredible! I can’t even begin to say how blessed I feel to have walked in such a beautiful show,” she says. “I’m still pinching myself.” Louis was especially inspired by being a part of a wave of meaningful change in the industry. “I love the diversity at Balenciaga,” said Louis of her moment alongside icons like Stella Tennant and Alek Wek. “It’s so empowering to walk in a show that makes such a statement.”
