1970s : Disco, Hippie & more

Malcolm Starr evening dress, 1970s
Fashioned from exquisite metallic brocaded satin, which has a hauntingly beautiful floral pattern. The demure pastels of the water borne flowers bring to mind the paintings of Monet. The waist is accented with an aqua satin cummerbund. The slightly high waist and A-line skirt style are quite flattering on large hips.

Pierre Cardin patio dress, 1970s
This innovative dress is right back in style today. The brilliant hues hark back to late 1960s counter cultural psychedelic art with its kaleidoscopically swirling patterns. The full-length sheer overdress is attached at the shoulders and armholes to a lined playsuit underneath. I love the way the print in the playsuit shows through the outer layer, adding depth to the design.

Trigère wool coat, 1970s
From the "master of cut," who first used wool for evening wear, this classic coat has a streamlined architectural style. It is all about simplicity and clean lines. The cut is comfortable and roomy without appearing bulky. The fullness is neatly contained by the shoulder yoke.

Ted Lapidus beaded evening dress, 1970
This romantic creation of white silk chiffon is covered with opaque white beads and sparkling silver sequins. The bodice is lavishly embellished with satin ribbon, floral embroidery, and faux pearls. The 3-dimensional, white-on-white design is particularly striking. The dress elegantly skims the body with a comfortable but sexy fit.

Chanel wool tweed suit, 1970s
This pre-Lagerfeld wool tweed suit with a 3/4-length coat and straight skirt fits right in with the pulled-together, matched look of the current season. The muted, pastel peach coloring as well as the impeccable Chanel cut and tailoring give the suit an effortless elegance. It has a Chanel Créations label.
