A Swarovski's Perry Ellis Award-winner and a star of Douglas Keeve's 2005 film Seamless, Doo-Ri Chung sits down with Style.com to talk about proportion, wit, and her mentor Mr. Beene.
how would you describe your clothes?
Deceptively simple.
what was your first fashion moment?
Meeting Geoffrey Beene. I had seen his retrospective at FIT in my junior year. I never knew American designers could be that way, and it floored me. Then in 1996, I was part of Paper's fashion mobile [an open call for designers run out of a Winnebago in Union Square], which was covered by Amy Spindler in The New York Times. The next day, I got a call from Mr. Beene. He called me in, and we just talked about the Ellsworth Kelly exhibition at MoMA. He didn't look at my sketches. I figured I didn't get the job, that he was just being very polite. And then he asked when I could start.
who is your favorite designer, living or dead?
Claire McCardell has inspired my work the most. I did my senior thesis around her diaper suit.
what is the best trend of all time?
I used to think irony, and now I think empathy. You didn't say "fashion trend"!
what is the best fashion trend of spring 2007?
Proportion.
what's the worst fashion faux pas?
I think that faux pas are necessary, for humor's sake.
what was yours?
My Kmart gray-sweatsuit stage in college.
chanel or elsa schiaparelli? and why?
Chanel, but I wish it were Elsa, because she represents charming wit, and smart wit in fashion, and I don't feel that I possess a lot of that.
what would you be if you weren't a designer?
If I weren't designing, I'd probably be cooking—but not dessert.
in what specific areas of business would you invest the $200,000 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund award?
It's important that we hire more staff.
if you didn't need the money for business, what would you do with it?
I'd take two months off and live in hotels and order room service.
