I'm not so sure of Rodarte as I once was. Their recent show was a total monstrosity. I think Philip Lim is really the best of the bunch and probably deserves it the most.

agree with you

(i think Doo.Ri should win the first time...watch Seamless)

A Swarovski's Perry Ellis Award-winner and a star of Douglas Keeve's 2005 film Seamless, Doo-Ri Chung sits down with Style.com to talk about proportion, wit, and her mentor Mr. Beene.

how would you describe your clothes?
Deceptively simple.

what was your first fashion moment?
Meeting Geoffrey Beene. I had seen his retrospective at FIT in my junior year. I never knew American designers could be that way, and it floored me. Then in 1996, I was part of Paper's fashion mobile [an open call for designers run out of a Winnebago in Union Square], which was covered by Amy Spindler in The New York Times. The next day, I got a call from Mr. Beene. He called me in, and we just talked about the Ellsworth Kelly exhibition at MoMA. He didn't look at my sketches. I figured I didn't get the job, that he was just being very polite. And then he asked when I could start.

who is your favorite designer, living or dead?
Claire McCardell has inspired my work the most. I did my senior thesis around her diaper suit.

what is the best trend of all time?
I used to think irony, and now I think empathy. You didn't say "fashion trend"!

what is the best fashion trend of spring 2007?
Proportion.

what's the worst fashion faux pas?
I think that faux pas are necessary, for humor's sake.

what was yours?
My Kmart gray-sweatsuit stage in college.

chanel or elsa schiaparelli? and why?
Chanel, but I wish it were Elsa, because she represents charming wit, and smart wit in fashion, and I don't feel that I possess a lot of that.

what would you be if you weren't a designer?
If I weren't designing, I'd probably be cooking—but not dessert.

in what specific areas of business would you invest the $200,000 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund award?
It's important that we hire more staff.

if you didn't need the money for business, what would you do with it?
I'd take two months off and live in hotels and order room service.

Doo.Ri is EVERYWHERE (esp ad wise e.g. the motorola KRAZR ad) in the november vogue... wouldn't be surprised if she took the prize, wouldn't bother me either

Hope Marchesa doesn't win! Luv them but not a deserving candidate.

I liked part of the S/S 07 collection of Rag & Bone...but I have to think about my opinion. Most of the American designers today don't impress me that much, and I'm not sure whether they deserve prizes.

I'm not sure whether I like the idea of awards even.

And The Winner Is…
The Third Annual CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Prize Goes To Doo-Ri Chung

"Know the woman that you want to dress. It's the most important thing." That was the advice Valentino doled out as he was introduced to the group of CFDA/Vogue finalists at Skylight Studios on Thursday night. He wasn't the only one offering suggestions to emerging designers at the third annual Fashion Fund dinner. Last year's winner, Jeff Halmos of Trovata, encouraged the 2006 nominees to "drink plenty of champagne." "And use the mentorship," his colleague Sam Shipley added.

After dinner in a hall decorated with fresh greenery from floor to sky-high ceiling, the newly anointed CFDA president, Diane von Furstenberg, toasted the finalists before introducing Marc Jacobs, who soliloquized about the ups and downs and in-betweens of his own success story. Then a Marchesa-clad Penélope Cruz presented prizes to the runners-up, Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte and Thakoon Panichgul. They went home with $50,000, Montblanc watches, and keys to a Lexus—leased, but still. "This is the biggest night of my life," Panichgul said from the stage, thanking his stylist pal Tina Chai for her "amazing eye." Equally moved, she added, "This must be what Miss America feels like."

But the real star of the evening was Doo-Ri Chung, who, fresh off June's Swarovski Perry Ellis Award for Emerging Talent and a wedding to her longtime boyfriend, won the big $200,000 check. Among the many guests to offer their congratulations was Harvey Weinstein. Introducing himself as "the boyfriend of one the losers," the movie producer and beau of Marchesa's Georgina Chapman told Doo-Ri, "Congratulations, you deserve it." What would the designer do to celebrate? "I have to leave in about 15 minutes to catch a flight to Zurich." Chung is the first American to be nominated for the Swiss Textile Award. Asked about her prospects in Europe, she said, "It's an honor just to be nominated—like tonight."
