MILAN — Today, just as 10 years ago, Alessandro Dell'Acqua wants his women to turn heads.
The Neapolitan designer entered the fashion realm with his first runway show in March 1996 with a spate of racy boudoir looks, namely sheer tops over briefs and fishnet stockings and gossamer dresses flimsy enough to reveal lace tops, on models teetering on sky-high stilettos, their eyes circled with black kohl.
"Sexy is something I feel inside and which I try to transmit," the designer said at the time. "My first collection was very non-Italian. It was super-sexy and only featured two colors — black and tan.
"This anniversary isn't the finishing line, but just a stretch of my fashion journey. There is still a lot to be done, especially in terms of brand awareness," said Dell'Acqua.
On Thursday night, the designer will host a party to fete his 10th anniversary at his Madison Avenue boutique in New York, which generated $2.6 million in sales last year. Genevieve Jones, Fabiola Beracasa and Tinsley Mortimer will cohost the evening.
"I chose New York because I'm very grateful to the U.S. It was the first market to support me and to understand my clothes," said the 43-year-old designer.
In 2005, Dell'Acqua had consolidated wholesale sales of $24.5 million, with a projected 30 percent increase this year. The strongest markets remain the U.S. (which accounts for 30 percent of the designer's business through 40 doors), Italy, Japan and Russia, while the fastest growing are the Middle East, Germany and England.
Celebrities that wear his clothes include Nicole Kidman, Scarlett Johansson, Jennifer Lopez, Halle Berry and Meena Suvari.
In 2003, Redwall Group, which also owns Borbonese (now designed by Dell'Acqua), acquired 70 percent of the firm. Dell'Acqua also consults for La Perla on its ready-to-wear collections. In 2005, the designer struck a deal with Tombolini for the production and distribution of his men's wear, which he launched in 1998 at Pitti Uomo in Florence.
