Who’s That Girl?
Alyssa Miller enters into the pantheon of iconic Guess models.

Alyssa Miller, Guess model, Vogue regular and all-around bombshell, is jealous of me—height-challenged, never-met-an-elastic-banded-skirt-she-didn’t-like me. Full-on girl envy ensues as I tell her about the time my tape recorder cut out during an interview with Justin Timberlake. “Shut up! I love him,” she cries as if we’re dishing at a slumber party rather than taking our morning coffee in the lounge of the Soho Grand. I immediately like this girl, and would love nothing more than to gush about hunky celebs, but quickly remember we’re here to talk top notes and dry downs for the launch of the newest Guess fragrance, Seductive. Miller is fronting the ad campaign and steamy commercial for the exotic new fragrance spiked with bergamot, jasmine and musky cashmere wood. We talk a little about the, well, seductive 30-second spot she filmed in Sicily with photographer Vincent Peters (and dreamy Italian model Luca Loy) in which Miller’s alluring perfume wafts through her open Venetian blinds and drives poor Luca mad. “She’s behind the window and then she see me, open window… and can happen something, you know?” Luca explains, in a behind-the-scenes clip, with a boyish smile and just about the sexiest broken English ever. With that, I’m in full-on girl envy of her—and the world is right-side up again.

GOTHAM: How were you discovered?
ALYSSA MILLER: It’s actually a really funny story. I was 14 and my dad took a picture of me at a family event. He sent the picture to an agency without telling me for fear that if I got rejected I’d get my feelings hurt. He sent in the picture, we met with the agency and the rest is history. I went to New York not long after that and it just took off.

What was your first big job?
I came to New York and the first thing I shot was Russian Vogue, which was, like, amazing. I was only in New York for a few days and they were flying me to Paris to shoot Italian Vogue. To this day those are some of my favorite pictures.

What are some of your favorite Guess campaigns?
I love, love, love the Anna Nicole Smith campaigns. For some reason that picture of her in the jeans and the curves just gets me. And everyone has that image of Claudia Schiffer with the hair in her face. I also love Drew Barrymore’s—those were, like, gorgeous.

Fragrances are very powerful in that they can transport you to places. Where does Seductive take you?
My mom always wore really floral fragrances, so it brings me back to that, which I love.

Who is this fragrance for?
It’s for every woman who needs that extra confidence as [she’s] walking out the door. It’ll make you stand taller.

Is there a craft to modeling? I imagine it’s like being an actor, but without the benefit of a script.
It is! With this [shoot the way things unfolded] was just really natural because we were in Sicily and the mood was just kind of there and the fragrance just has that… I mean, it is seductive. So, it was really easy with this one, but it can be challenging sometimes. You have to get the right look in your eyes.

People are forever curious about what models eat. What’s your favorite NYC meal?
There is this amazing pizza place. It’s the best pizza in New York, I think. It’s called Keste.

Did you do any runway work during Spring 2011 Fashion Week?
Honestly, not my cup of tea. I’m just not a runway girl.

Alyssa Miller: On Real Beauty

It may have been Alyssa Miller’s exotic beauty that led to her discovery at the age of fourteen by a modeling agency, but it has been her fascinating character that has made her attractive to the biggest names in beauty and fashion. She’s been photographed by many of the world’s most famous fashion photographers (including, Mert and Marcus, Peter Lindbergh, Patrick Demarchelier, Ellen von Unwerth, and Vincent Peters), has appeared on the pages of countless high fashion magazines around the world (such as Italian Vogue, V Magazine, Allure, Harper’s Bazaar and on the cover of Vogue Italia Beauty) and as been the face of many campaigns (including Stella McCartney and Victoria’s Secret). You likely recognize her most, though, for starring in the Spring 2010 GUESS by Marciano campaign and as the current face of the brand’s new Fragrance, GUESS Seductive ($62).

We sat down with Alyssa Miller and asked her to weigh in on Real Beauty.

What do you think makes someone beautiful?
I truly believe that beauty is very unique to the individual and therefore undefinable. Every woman has a beauty to her.

How do you deal with the pressure for body perfection in our culture?
I struggle with body issues as much, if not more than, every other woman. But, as I get older, I am starting to embrace my little imperfections. I try to be as healthy as possible. I eat healthfully and work out at least three times a week. But I think it is important to realize that nobody is perfect, and that I never will be. But that is what makes me special and different.

If you could give your younger self advice about beauty, what would it be?
Well, I would probably tell my self to lay off the blue eyeliner, not cute, and to not pluck my eyebrows into oblivion, people would kill for my eyebrows (so I’m told), to wear sunscreen everyday and to wash off all my make up before bed.

What’s your one, can’t-live-without-it beauty product?
I have a fairly simple beauty routine, so the one thing that I absolutely could not live with out is… Chapstick. I am obsessed! My lips are totally addicted!

This is Alyssa. I saw these photos on Marilyn agency site in her page. Interesting to see all photos from this shoot :)

Nope, that's Alyssa. You just have to look carefully. It's the make-up.

Thanks FRANCY!
