(supreme being)Rarely in fashion does a doe-eyed beauty actually turn out to be a doe-eyed innocent. But that is precisely the case with 16-year-old Amanda Laine. “When I first came to Pairs,” says the fashion ingénue, “I was just like, who’s Balenciaga?” Since winning the V A Model! search and signing a contract with Supreme this past February, Laine has firmly established herself as a force-or more accurately, a face-to be reckoned with. Most often described as a darker, edgier Jennifer Connelly-“I guess we both have long faces,” says Laine-she has “muse” written all over her. The deep-set eyes, hollow cheeks, and impossibly tiny porcelain doll lips haunted runways from New York to Paris, and brought designers and editors alike under their spell.
“Amanda has the most perfect body for fashion,” says Paul Rowland, founder and president of Supreme. “She’s got a naturally chic walk and a personality that’s equally confident and engaging.”
After making her New York debut at Alexander Wang this past February, Laine went on to bag Prada in Milan less than two weeks later. Miuccia-charged success brought her all the way to Paris, where she stomped through opening walks at McQueen and Miu Miu before a triumphant closing at Vuitton. Such a stellar résumé makes it difficult to believe that modeling had never occurred to the freckled 5’11” Canadian knockout, who insists her greatest ambition is “to teach high school gym and math.” In fact, it was Amanda’s commitment to phys ed that landed her the gig in the first place. “I got scouted playing basketball,” she says. “After the game, I was all sweaty in my gym shorts, chicken legs sticking out everywhere, and this woman came up and said, ‘Oh my God, you have the tiniest little legs!’ and told me about a modeling contest online.” A few clicks, and the rest is history-well, recent history.
“She looks like a young Frida Kahlo,” says casting director Russell Marsh. “Boyish yet tough, coupled with great posture and a stellar walk.”
Despite her meteoric rise to fame, Amanda continues to live with her parents in rural Orillia, Ontario. “I’m not into the whole fashion thing yet,” she shrugs. That may be, but the fashion thing is definitely into her. While she brings us to our knees, one long stride of that flawless runway walk at a time, Laine says she plans to frequent the likes of American Apparel and Zara. “It’s not like you can wear couture to a bonfire!” – Catherine Blair Pfander

Amanda Laine leapt from the V/Supreme model search to the best catwalks of Europe via Prada, Balenciaga, Miu-Miu and McQueen. Then came the power edits in blue chip bibles like V and Pop which makes this Canadian teenager a very very coveted proposition.
