KEEPING up with the latest modelling-industry fads is as much fun as a (good)episode of Big Brother. There is always an agenda:who's shooting who - and for what? ? Who's hot? Who's not? What's next?
The last has already been decided.
Step forward Erin W (Gucci girl), Natasha V (Calvin Klein and Gucci), Angie Schmidt, (Prada), Liya and Liliana D (YSL), and Karolina K (Celine and Louis Vuitton). Get to know these names and their extra initials (which usually disguise incomprehensible surnames)quick.
You may not yet have heard of them, but when the autumn ad campaigns appear next month, these girls will be gazing at you from every bus, billboard and magazine cover on the planet.
If you thought the boyish-looking Belgian crew had taken over from the Brazilian bombshells as the current princesses of the catwalk, take note: none of the above speaks Flemish.
Liya is Ethiopian, Karolina K is Czech, Erin W is Texan, Natasha V is a Bosnian Serb, Angie Schmidt is South African and Liliana D is from Chihuahua in Mexico. Industry scouts say the next hot place for models is actually Croatia (it's the cheekbones and thoroughbred thighs, apparently), although anywhere formerly in the Eastern bloc will do.
It was only six months ago that the so-called new look was androgynous butch chic - girls with half-shaved heads (model Fanni Bostrum's haircut - short back and sides, , floppy fringe - even got its own name, the Fanni).
It was a backlash against the big-bosomed Brazilians, led by Gisele. But six months is a long time in fashion. "That Fanni thing has moved on, " says Gavin Boardman of Storm. "We're booking a lot of classic doe-eyed beauties now. "
"Butch chic has had its day, " says Wayne Sterling of models.com in New York. "All the girls are growing their hair. "
Hottest commodity of all right now is Karolina Kurkova. Seventeen years young, the super-tall blonde with the lush mouth and Slavic eyes is, officially, the model of the moment, with the most magazine covers and designer campaigns. "No one can touch her, " says Sterling. . .
"She's got what we call cover velocity - she's been on a cover a month since February, including all the Vogues worldwide. " Kurkova's success highlights the importance of sex appeal in fashion. For all the quirky appeal of the androgynous crew, it's still the jaw- dropping beauty with the six-foot frame and boobs that occupies the top spot.
So what comes next? One thing is for sure:drop-dead gorgeous looks are back on the agenda. "We are definitely seeing a return to classic, fresh-faced, stunning girls, " says Massimo Redealli of IMG Europe, "not hard, not diva but girls-next-door with a bit more. " The next batch of ber girls-next-door are already coming up through the ranks, and their look is doe-eyed, full-lipped, button-nosed - very Julie Christie, , very Brooke Shields, very Jane Birkin. Top of the new list is Lou Doillon, whose credentials couldn't be better - she is the 18-year-old daughter of Jane Birkin and French film director Jacques Doillon. She's already appeared in Italian Vogue, W and Interview magazine. Doillon also acts, and her first film Carrment L'Ouest is now showing in France.
THE new Prada girl Angie Schmidt is another Jane Birkin lookalike.
Liverpool girl Natasha Prince, 18, is a brunette update on Twiggy. Maria Carla, an Italian, has the look of a hippy teenager circa 1969.
Natalia V, whose look is described as "Lolita meets Brooke Shields " by one admirer is racking up campaign appearances including Versus, Anna Molinari and Moschino. Also keep an eye out for Northampton native Leaf Underwood,16, from Select, whose Audrey Hepburn-meets- Jean Seberg look has kicked up a storm of interest in just one week.
Of course, if you are drop-dead sexy your look has a much longer shelf life (just remember the reign of Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, Claudia Schifffer, and Naomi Campbell). British Vogue's latest issue, which hits the stands next week, will for the first time, come packaged with a model supplement, featuring old favourites and the hot new faces.
