Exclusive: Alexander Wang on the Allure of Anna Ewers

"Anna is just an incredible beauty. She is quietly confident about her sexuality—almost nonchalant about it. She is super feminine and androgynous at the same time, and she is attractive to men and to women, which creates that feeling of ambiguity and mystery.” That’s how Alexander Wang began to describe his muse and friend, Anna Ewers. Their relationship started with a bang at Balenciaga: During Wang’s first season as the brand’s creative director, Fall 2013, he cast the then-unknown model to walk in the show. Fast-forward to the Spring 2014 collections and she opens Wang’s namesake show in New York, a position she’d keep for the next two seasons. Nearly two years later, their partnership is well known: She’s been the face of four Alexander Wang campaigns (including that infamous and racy Denim x Alexander Wang one) and fronted Balenciaga’s B. Balenciaga fragrance.

“She has the allure of a studio-era Hollywood actress, and she is also this normal, humble girl,” Wang continued. “Anna is real and genuine. On set or in fittings, she is completely focused and professional. She has a versatility that is unique, kind of like the original supermodels. She can wear nothing at all, or something demure, or layers and layers of crazy, deconstructed, asymmetrical stuff, and she looks amazing in everything. She adapts to the look, to her environment, to the objective of what the designer or the photographer wants to express.” Other brands have picked up on Ewers’ alluring quality, from Marc Jacobs to Mango, both of which use her as a model for their Spring 2015 campaigns. Ewers’ Fall 2015 runway spots have been equally impressive, including turns at Tom Ford, the opening spot at Rodarte, and of course, closing Alexander Wang’s show.

Despite her many clients, no one has the relationship with the German stunner that Wang does. “When I met Anna first, she was very timid,” he said. “She has opened up so much, without ever losing her kindness. I am so proud that I have seen her evolve and grow so beautifully into such a major success. And, all that aside, I love going out dancing with Anna!”
