JB: Ava Gardner is one of my favorite actresses and beauties of all time. Can you elaborate a little more on the magnificent Miss Gardner.
Leatrice: Oh yes, Ava Gardner was so breathtaking. She truly was beautiful. Her hair, skin, figure, and exquisite face were, well, just simply gorgeous! She was as sweet, warm, and sincere as she was beautiful; and that's saying a lot. She also was very bright, yes, very intelligent; and too few people in those days and today appreciate that fact. Ava was very bright. She (like my father, John Gilbert) was always trying to improve her quick mind. What a combination she had -- a stunning beauty, a sweet, kind, considerate personality, very intelligent and extremely talented as an actress. I thought she was brilliant in films like Show Boat, Mogambo, The Barefoot Contessa, Bohwani Junction, On The Beach, and The Night of the Iguana . Ava was always down-to-earth and very warm and friendly. Her marriage to Mickey Rooney was pretty rough going. Mickey was and is very sweet and talented, but in those days he was "always on" all the time. The marriage was impossible. He was drinking and carrying on and always out with his fellow cronies. When Ava separated from Mickey, she leased a little apartment in Westwood Village. I used to go and spend the weekend with her, and she and I would talk about Mickey and other guys and, of course, movies and Hollywood. Oh, yes, Jimmy, I also remember Ava and I having to do cheesecake photos for MGM publicity at the beach. I was tall and thin and rather boyish looking in my bathing suit. I remember Ava hitting the beach with her curves and ample bosom and beautiful dark auburn hair, like some Venus on the beach, and there I was. Boy, that was an ego smasher. Ava really acted oblivious to her beauty. A few of the films we were in together were Hitler's Madmen, We Were Dancing, Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo, and Calling Dr. Gillespie.
