Her career has taken her from the classroom to the boardroom to outer space. She's run for president and competed in NASCAR races, and she's done it with grace--and an impeccable wardrobe.
She, of course, is Barbie.
<H4>In Pictures: The Many Careers Of Barbie

It all began in 1959, when Barbie debuted at the New York Toy Fair as a teenage fashion model. This was an era of glamour--of Marilyn Monroe, Ava Gardner and Some Like It Hot--and so, of course, Barbie made her entrance in a black-and-white-striped bathing suit, open-toed black heels, gold hoop earrings, white sunglasses and blond hair. (And for those who refused to admit that blondes had more fun, she also came as a brunette.)

Did you know that only 6% of film directors and 12% of screenwriters are women? That's perhaps a bit too much testosterone for anyone's good. Birds Eye View tries to shift that balance a wee bit by promoting and developing the work of women in film around the world - and throws in a bit of celebration in the shape of its film festival. Kicking off today and running for nine days at the BFI Southbank, ICA, Picturehouses and The Gate, you can share some cinematic sisterhood.
Feature films include double Oscar nominated Frozen River, the critically acclaimed French film Grown Ups / Les Grandes Personnes and Berlinale favourite The Heart is a Dark Forest. A retrospective season takes a look at Vamps, Vixens and Femmes Fatales, which means you get to experience Hollywood icons like Ava Gardner, Rita Hayworth, Marilyn Monroe, Louise Brooks and Barbara Stanwyck on the big screen. There's also a shorts programme where you can catch Sam Taylor Wood's Love You More, starring Andrea Riseborough.
With special events including a masterclass with American Psycho director Mary Harron and a bunch of silent films getting the live musical accompaniment treatment, there's plenty to tickle the fancy of anyone - not just those without dangly bits. The Birds Eye View Film Festival runs from today until 13 March, although the BFI's season runs to 25 March.

Ava Lavinia Gardner came from very humble beginnings in Brogden, North Carolina. Born as the youngest of seven in 1922 to cotton and tobacco farmers, Gardner led a hardworking life up until she happened to visit her older sister in New York City in 1941.

There, her sister’s husband (a professional photographer) took a portrait of Gardner and displayed it in his store window on Fifth Avenue. While walking by the shop one day, Loews Theater legal clerk Barnard Duhan spotted the 18-year-old green-eyed beauty. It was fate.

You see, had Duhan not regularly posed as an MGM scout to pick up girls, he may never have gone into the photo shop, never would have actually sent Gardner’s photo into the studio and her career would never have begun. Thank goodness for us all he was such a sleaze.

Kathryn Grayson has never balked. The character in Show Boat is not a far stretch from previous roles, yet it seems Kathryn Grayson has never been more awesome then with this picture.

The wonderful cast in this movie is startling: Kathryn Grayson, Ava Gardner, Howard Keel, Joe E. Brown, Marge Champion
Genuinely an award winning entertainment with characters that you can exceptionally relate to, the movie is critical to acknowledge the least. I will not forget to mention that Ava Gardner is mind-boggling also! You will want to see Kathryn Grayson in Show Boat today!

The show that first defined the Broadway musical has never come to the screen intact, despite three tries. But take this splashy 1951 MGM extravaganza on its own terms, and it boggles the eyes. Not to mention the ears: The Kern-Hammerstein score includes some staples of the American songbook, such as “Make Believe,” “After the Ball,” and “Can’t Help Lovin’ That Man.” Perhaps a riverboat gambler is almost too-easy casting for Howard Keel, and Kathryn Grayson is overly twittery, which may be why the film’s middle sags when they take center stage. But any time the uncannily beautiful Ava Gardner smolders, a lush tragic undertone takes over (even if the most interesting parts of her story seem to take place offscreen). The physical production is extraordinary: the busy riverside setting, the outrageous color design, and best of all an “Old Man River” (sung by William Warfield) staged in the mists of morning. – Robert Horton

If it's good enough for Ava Gardner.....

Ava Gardner, Audrey Hepburn Marlene Dietrich, Jackie O, Grace Kelly, Cary Grant and Errol Flynn all wore it....so did an old flame, can't tell you which flavor, that would be indiscreet and Creed is very discreet.....
