Balenciaga Resort 2023 New York

We're not even in F/W 22 yet. Did we need more mediocre clothes this early?

To be completely honest with you guys, as we are all one big family....

I am originally from Eastern Europe and Demna's work is actually something that strikes the right note on me. I cannot wait for his second couture show and I'd wear probably half of that collection. His shows, in spite of the set/music etc are really good and exciting - he is a showman who can sell me a well tailored wool-silk coat.

I respect that a lot.

The concept and the setting of the show was really cool I think. The clothes aren't that interesting but I guess it's supposed to be that way.

Another Kering Adidas collab... At least this one makes more sense than Gucci's but still boring.

Also I was freaking out over seeing Dolly Parton in the audience but ofc it was just Alexis Stone

I really liked the first half of the show, but it was Demna at his best with his incredibly strong tailoring skills so it's not that surprising. The second half of the show with the Adidas collab was also kinda nice, at least it made much more sense than the Adidas x Gucci one. However, I hope we've already reached the oversaturation of collabs because it's not even unexpected nor interesting anymore. I'm also not sure if this strategy of Kering of doing the same activations for both Balenciaga and Gucci is the right one for the longer term, especially with Balenciaga always being the second one.

Somehow always expect better but always end up disappointed!! I had to switch off after a couple of the Adidas looks!! Everything about this has been done before right down to the Adidas looks!! Again the show concept was cool.. but that’s where it ends…. He’s excelling at show concepts but not the fashion.. it’s a shame because you want to love it but the clothes just don’t live up to the hype. Rehash, repeats, give us something new, I know his formula has worked well thus far but come on.. change a silhouette here or there for crying out loud!!

In moments like these I feel bad for Alex Wang’s career at Balenciaga.

Demna is executing all these different ideas that Wang has touched on in the past and just doing it in a way that’s more impactful. Stock market, adidas collab, clothing for the street, etc.

One of his worst. He should stick to minimalism. Simple styling and absence of gimmicks worked well for him. I don't find it to be any better than Alexander Wang (well it's obviously better made but still).

His Balenciaga is becoming so predictable now. A New York show, at the stock exchange, adding "irony" with the Adidas collaboration, with the models wearing gimp/fetish masks for that slight American Psycho feel (because the references weren't predictable enough). In a way it's becoming similar to Juergen Teller: all the tropes of "challenging the system" but is is it really that provocative when it is this predictable?

There are some great tailored pieces in that first half of the collection. Unfortunately, it is something we have seen before almost exactly. Or at least try to see, because their shows as of late have had the most annoying lighting/production tricks that detracts focus on the actual clothes.

The first section is really quite nice. Good volumes and tailoring and I really feel that this he has under control. I think the proportion kind of works, this super cartoony bulky oversize at the leg with the huge shoe.

But then it goes wrong. The adidas collab is roughly 6 years too late (like any collab really) and the clothing is so played out at this point. I can’t understand why he insists putting these tshirts and shorts on the runway. We have seen it, I’m so bored! It’s especially annoying because this guy can be super good.

the fetish suits are also something I’m a bit negative about. It’s a styling trick. It kind of helps putting this Adidas stuff in a line at a fetish party context but that just comes of as a bit Zoolander ish.

The location and soundtrack ofcourse is genius. He’s the best showman of our time.

Balenciaga is a prestigious name that deserves more integrity and decency. To say that, I would pass his collections by without giving a second glance if they are from another brand. Like any other big brand nowadays, the sets always intend to compensate for his lack of skills as a designer, but not to elevate the finesse of the clothes.

I'll wait for the couture show, that is the only show from Demna that I look forward to nowadays.

This show just like his other RTW shows, they all looked the same. Nothing new, nothing fresh nor disruptive about this whole shenanigan.
