As Banana Republic celebrates its 30th anniversary, the brand looked back for fall, emphasizing icons in its fashion show presented Tuesday night at Exit Art. Vice presidents of design Alessandra Brunialti and Michael Anderson showed staples like the crisp white shirt, little black dress, trenchcoat, and chino. A pebble leather anniversary trench from the upscale Monogram line weighs in at $1,200. Newly-appointed creative director Simon Kneen will debut his designs with Spring 2009.
Styled by George Cortina after two seasons of Joe Zee, this collection featured fitted silhouettes that emphasized rich texture and juxtaposed weights. With the exception of a few pops of fuchsia, a palate of grey, navy, white, and black dominated the offerings. A funnel neck tweed coat worn over a pencil skirt and patent bootie communicated elegance. Other standouts included a black lace dress and khaki cape trench.
For men, the designs had a sleek, reserved vibe vibe. Pants were largely tapered and paired with cashmere sweaters, plaid vests, and a beautiful khaki cashmere-lined 30th anniversary coat.
