Banana Republic took a fashion-forward approach to Spring 2007 without forgoing its forte: clean, timeless clothing. The company’s runway show Tuesday at the Puck Building, styled by Joe Zee, blended the hip, menswear appeal of his most recent client—Justin Timberlake—with that of design director Deborah Lloyd’s attention to Banana Republic’s roots.
Witnessing it all was a front row populated with not just the usual high-ranking editors, but Tinsley Mortimer, Amanda Hearst, Luigi Tadini, and Max Minghella as well. There were three components to Lloyd’s show this season—neutrals and layering (“reinventing our heritage,” Lloyd said); showing off the leg; and 1960’s St. Tropez. Lloyd explored extremes via pants, offering slim and wide variations with a multitude of looks. A gold short sleeve twist dress was adorable, but separates like an ivory silk sleeve less tunic with button detail and green pleated blouse were standouts. “Cropped jackets that were loose were paired with skinny pants that hugged the legs,” she said. “A little more fashion than in seasons past, but still young and fresh.” Lloyd also explored the evolution of the tulip skirt, offering a bubble mini knit dress, a blue white floral bubble mini, and a khaki shirt dress, complete with a bubble hem.
For men, it was utilitarian with a twist; distressed brown leather jackets and linen shirts featured buttons and pockets galore. Accessories, meanwhile, were simple and understated, including a yellow leather woven bag that—paired with itsy bitsy bikinis and simple sweaters—will prove to be a popular item come next spring.
