Banana Republic Does Jet-Set Safari for Spring

New York - In 1978 when the founders of Banana Republic, Mel and Patricia Ziegler, launched the company in California, they turned safari military looks into a fashion statement.

But stepping into a Banana Republic store now, the high-end brand owned by Gap Inc. since 1983, very little aside from the name would ever hint at this travel and adventure focus of the past. When the Ziegler's company was acquired, the company rebranded it as the city sophisticate's go-to for runway style and upscale quality at accessible prices, which is what it continues to do today.

For the Spring '08 collection however, presented during a runway show on Nov. 1, Banana Republic revisited its safari roots, updating khaki classics like the trench - as a chic belted sleeveless shirtdress or vest - and included military-inspired blouses and jackets. For both men and women, there were also relaxed wide-leg trousers.

The fashion-forward Banana Republic customer with her eyes on looks she saw come down the New York runways for spring - high-waisted voluminous short skirts at Proenza Schouler, sleek racerback tank dresses at Calvin Klein, or bold knits in '70s-inspired colors at Marc by Marc Jacobs - will find plenty to love in this collection. A swingy black and brown printed linen pleated skirt looked smart when paired with a white military-inspired buttondown shirt, while maxi-length silk tank dresses popped in bright purple, and exuded Saint-Tropez elegance in a yellow geometric print version.

And while three-quarter length sleeve coats in mustard yellow and dresses in hunter orange may not find many takers, a key for any spring wardrobe will certainly be the inclusion of jolts of bold color.

For men, Banana Republic offered crinkled cardigans, loose khaki trousers or slim seersucker pants. Compared with the women's collection, where things were kept structured but loose, the men's collection consisted of a more body-conscious, trim silhouette.

Banana Republic's Spring 2008 collection, presented Thursday night at Lux Studios, presented a sparse and cleaned-up aesthetic, with streamlined accents that played on the urban safari, city sophisticate look. Following the departure of Deborah Lloyd, the brand's executive vice president of design and product development (who started at Kate Spade as co-president and creative director that same day), a trio of the label's design vice presidents--Alessandra Brunialti (women's), Michael Anderson (men's), and Deborah Camplin (accessories)--ensured that the pieces remained true to the brand's lineage. In particular, the preppy trench coat looks--including a chic sleeveless trench dress--and men's oxfords juxtaposed nicely with the long maxi floral dresses and flowing skirts that took a bit of the prep school atmosphere out of the collection and brought it forward into the now.

Racer back dresses, outstanding in purple, and cute cap sleeve suiting were highlights of the women's collection, along with a particularly high-waisted full skirt. Bright colors reigned, with hues of yellow and purple shimmering alongside the tan and khaki staples in everything from tailored skirts to safari shorts. In addition to stylish handbags, the company's new collection of sunglasses, perfectly retro in their shape and white hue, brought the look together.

This reminds me a bit of Moschino Cheap & Chic - maybe it's just the styling.

it's hard to know whether it's the styling or actual pieces that makes this look good (ie are they just putting the skirts quite high or are they really high waisted) but i'm loving the purple gowns and the first couple of looks....

I like those. Does anyone happened to have pics of the whole show?

I LOVE those long dresses. I'm pretty impressed. The holiday collection does really suck ellesea!

The orange coat: lovely. And I also like the fuchsia/purples they are showing. I haven't been spending a lot of money in Banana (or other GPS) outlets in a while. This could be something that draws me back.

I've been looking all over, but it seems like nobody has pictures of the entire show. I'm sure GapInc.com will have the collection up in a few months' time.

Thanks for posting these papa levante and lucy! karma.:flower: I've been waiting for these. I hope more pics surface from somewhere.

I always do a "trend board" for the stock room with all the looks from BR and similar looks from other shows (real designers) to compare trends and show influences. I think it helps the other employees with product and trend knowledge and it's just fun for me to make.

Does anyone have a firstview account? I think a lot of the winter pics from that thread came from firstview but I can't get on it since I don't have an account...

TIA!

lovely...very New York in spring:p
heard that it is coming to London soon...
great if it is true...another great alternative from Zara and COS...
just hope the price stays the same as it is in the States:flower:

THIS is Banana Republic?? wow... Can't wait to see the men's collection, now.
