Vogue Brasil

Just wanted to announce that I am shooting for Vogue Brasil tomorrow.

Three Days in a Row...

Three Days in a Row…

Just finished a hectic three days for two magazines, Vogue Brasil and Spring Magazine. As usual it was a lesson of how to think on your feet and shoot from the hip. I was honored to work with one of the best up and coming designers Alexis Mabille. My Bonbons story translated in to English (Candies) was a real technical and diplomatic challenge, but it all turned out for the best. I am posting this un-retouched RAW “Hot off the Press” sample from todays shoot. When done she will be sitting on a huge pink and white candy mushroom. Will update after the post-production is complete.

Bye for now…

Ben

The End of “Haute Couture?”

The End of “Haute Couture?
In the good old days, the “Haute Couture” shows were the most anticipated of all of the collections. It was akin to the Formula 1 of the fashion world. It is unique to Paris and all of the greatest designers the likes Hubert de Givenchy, Christian Dior, Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, , Valentino, Jean-Louis Scherrer, Pierre Cardin, Emanuel Ungaro, Christian Lacroix and others would show the epitome of what they were striving for. These were prototypes of sorts and unique pieces of art that were considered the barometer of where fashion was going in the future. These architects of fabric and exotic materials would go to great lengths to establish their identity through their designs.

The press would come in hordes to get a view of these collections, to be the first to show them in their glossy fashion magazines. Shoots would be set up immediately after the collections and given to those magazines with the greatest influence on the public. Only the finest of glossies were given these collections to shoot and in order of priority. It was usually Vogue that was in place number “1″ and the rest would have to wait their turn. The constant bickering between Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar was always omnipresent. You could smell it in the air when the major editors would appear in the same room with each other.

The pecking order at the shows was very well defined and this was also mirrored in where the editors were positioned during the fashion shows. The first row was always a who’s who of the fashion industry and often, shows would not commence until “THAT” Editor in Chief was seated!
Unfortunately, times have changed and as a result of the social conditions, financial malaise and a radically shifted mind set, a new paradigm has emerged and “Haute Couture” seems to be unofficially at least, on Life Support. It is the “Pret a Porter” ready to wear collections that are now the “Queen of the Castle”.

There are a few of the greats and some emerging new designers that are attempting to keep the boat afloat with interesting eclectic designs that are a kind of melting pot of “Haute Couture Meets Pret a Porter”. Alexis Mabille is one designer that comes to mind, that I recently had the privilege to shoot for VOGUE Brasil.

Who knows, perhaps in a few years when we are out of this financial melt down, designers will have more time to play and again produce pieces of art that will influence and inspire the fashion industry to take artistic risks again.

I certainly hope so…

Lost and Found...Chopard Campaign

Lost and Found...Chopard Campaign

Several years ago when living in the French countryside near Paris, I kept all of my film archives in the barn next to the house. Unfortunately most of those archives were lost. Recently, I was pleased to find that someone on the Fashion Spot blog found the published series from one of my Advertorials for Chopard and posted them there. I was totally blown. I also realized that I didn't have Photoshop at the time ;-)

I am pleased to be able to share them with you. They are from around 1986-87.

“Phashion Photographer Phalasies”

“Phashion Photographer Phalasies”

I have been asked on many occasions about how one might embark in to the rocky road of the “Phashion” business. I discussed this topic from an academic perspective in one of my earlier essays. However, I feel compelled to discuss some of the “Phalasies” associated with breaking in to the “Biz”.

Do you have to be a good photographer to break in to the “Biz”?

The answer in an unequivocal NO! It hasn’t so much to do with talent, but with attitude, panache, perspective and audacity. How you perceive the social fabric (no pun intended) in to imagery is a very important part of the process.

Do you need to be good technically to succeed?

Again, the answer is a very adamant NO!!! As any photographer can ally themselves with a good post production company or individual, getting your images to look polished or really unpolished is not difficult. When I shot with film and photoshop was not as yet in the mainstream and in it’s infancy, I actually had to get it right from the get go. If not, I wouldn’t get past first base.

Can I get the job once my Portfolio is ready?

What is ready? Actually the answer is, it depends. Unfortunately having a Great Book, will not do the trick. Networking is one of the most important aspects of getting a gig. Knowing the appropriate person in the right position to give you an opportunity is essential. Also knowing who not to ask is as important as knowing who to ask. If you did not know that going to the Art Director shows your naivety by not knowing that it would have been better to see the Editor for a specific magazine, that alone can ruin your chances of getting in to the circle. The inverse also applies in other cases. Going to see the Editor can really piss off the Art Director. They may think that you were trying to circumvent their authority. It is a very political business in that respect. Do your research and find out who can rally make the decision. It is often more than just one person. But none the less do you HOMEWORK.

To succeed, do you need to be in the major centers?

The answer is YES!

If you are not in New York, Paris, London, Milan, Los Angeles or Tokyo and in some cases, Madrid, Sao Paulo, Chicago, Munich, Miami, Toronto and Moscow, best to reconsider your goals. Be ready to pack your bags and prepare yourself for a fun ride.

Do I need “Pro Gear” to break in to the business?

NO, NO and NO. Work with what you have and when you get the job, the client will pay for the rental of anything you might need to accomplish the completion of the project. I don’t have a studio. I have some flash gear for my own personal work and to experiment with. In all cases, the client has paid and will do so for all of the technical support costs. I just have to bring myself to the shoot. If I want to use my gear and it is appropriate to get the job done, I will do so. It is you and not your gear that they are hiring.

More “Photographer Phalasies” to Come…

Ben, just wanted to say I'm a fan of your style, which seems to be pretty unique among fashion photographers these days, and love the fact that you regularly participate on the Pentax Forums as well. Please keep sharing!
