MACK THE LIFE: Don't bet on Bob Mackie being at Christie's on Nov. 22 when some of his costumes and couture pieces are put on the block. "We'll put you in a closed-circuit room," Dorothy Twining Globus told the designer at a private dinner Tuesday at La Grenouille. "So I can scream," Mackie said.
Candace Bushnell, Charles Askegard, Patricia Field, Joy Behar, Steve Janowitz, Valerie Steele, Lillian Ross and others were on hand for the low-key event. When conversation turned to today's younger celebrities, Mackie sighed, longing for the days of Lana Turner and other sirens. "I can't tell one blonde from the next today. They've lost the magic. On the red carpet, they say, 'I borrowed this from so and so, and this one gave me the shoes and my bag is from ... It's like doing a commercial. And if you ask them to do a commercial, they would say, 'Oh no, I don't do commercials.'"
