I'm interested in becoming a rep/vendor? for a private label or a. Do companies usually post these positions online anywhere or do they only hire within the company. What qualifications do you need ? What is the salary like?

I think you're talking about a sales rep who shows a label to buyers and gets the clothes in stores and boutiques, right? I work with a lot of sales reps because of my boutique. The sales reps usually work out of a showroom and not, like, directly for the company. So most sales reps are hired to represent one brand within a larger showroom, or perhaps they'll rep multiple brands within a certain territory. Some own their own showrooms as well.

I'm not sure about education, I get the impression that education isn't as important as experience. But doing at least a 2 year course in fashion would probably be a good thing. You can always start as a showroom assistant or intern.

Salary, not sure but they make commissions, as do the assistants.

Most sales reps nowadays get 12~15% commission. That is the market rate.

It is not education based but experience based; if you want to start as a sales rep, look around classified ads in the LA or NY markets. Not sure about Chicago scene, but here in LA there are bunch of job listings for entry-level sales asst all the time.
