Brian Wildsmith started making childrens books in 1962 and is one of the greatest living children's illustrators IMO.
His detailed and colorful illustrations, often featuring animals, can't help but make one happy

I found the fabel The Lion and the Rat by La Fontaine, illustrated by Brian Wildsmith in an antiquarian bookshop this summer and immediately had to get it. I keep picking it up and discovering new beautiful details..
