You know when you go to the salon and they make your scalp feel so smooth and clean? I love that but I get build-up after a few shampoos....I'm rinsing REALLY thouroughly but I still can't make it all smooth lol.

How do I get it really clean feeling? Is my shampoo not working?

Couple things - one, a good clarifying shampoo every so often may help. Two, some people are anti-silicone and anti-sulfates. Silicones coat the hair and make it smooth but some are only soluble w/harsh detergents and over the long run some say they dry hair out or impair color.

One brand of gentle (nice) silicone-free shampoo and conditioner is Elucence (at least their moisturizing shampoo and moisturizing conditioner). I'm just trying this now and my hair feels great. (If you switch to something like this, for that first time probably best to use some clarifying shampoo to remove the build-up to a degree. Redken's is nice and smells like Fruit Loops!)

Here's the site for that shampoo company:

I read in French Elle that Orlando Pita (hairdresser/stylist) never uses shampoo himself...! But instead uses alot of hair treatments such as hair masks etc.
I found that really wierd at first, but then i decided to try it out myself. I didn't wash my hair with shampoo for over a week, using only hair treatment masks instead (just wet hair, apply mask, wait, rinse) and it actually did work quite well for me, my scalp feeling a lot less irritated and built up.And my hair did look and feel clean even without the shampoo.

But i haven't done that for a while now, because it does require more time and is not practical when you are travelling, which i have been... shampoo is quicker.
But you can easily give that a try too if you like! :flower:

you could try using some french shampoos..
j.f. lazartigue
leonor greyl from valmont

they're not as foamy and seriously leave your hair squeaky clean. plus the greyl line smells so great; roses, lily of the valley, etc..

browneyes-! what you said was so interesting! was it a scalp purifying mask or usual hair moisture replenishing masks?

Well i actually did it with just the usual hair moisture masks, but i guess a scalp purifying mask would do the trick really well too :)

Do you have hard-water where you live?
Could be the reason why you've got scalp buildup.

If not - could be buildup from your shampoo/conditioner/hairproduct.

i personally got mad buildup from all Garnier Fructis shampoos and conditioner.
Re: HardWater - when i moved to Toronto from the Caribbean - found i had waaaaaaaaaaay more buildup than ever in my life. Didn't think it was possible to get even more buildup until i visited Collingwood for a week, and the water's even harder = even more buildup on my scalp (and even on my face too).

TRY: an after-shampoo rinse made out of 1:1 (or 1/2 ACVinegar to 1 Water) solution of Apple Cider Vinegar and Warm Water. Rub into your scalp and rinse out with more of the solution. Then you can use a light conditioner and rinse that out with water. This solution will help remove HardWater AND residue from Shampoo/Conditioner/Product.

ALSO: you could try to only wash your hair with distilled water or.. as some models do - with Evian.. i'd think Evian's pricey for this.. so you can get 4L of Distilled Water cheap. That's if you want to go through all that jazz.

good luck!

There are also whole-house water softener machines you can buy that filter out hard minerals. I'd think the most likely buildup culprit would be silicones though - even perhaps certain brands w/certain formulations in one geography that are formulated differently (ie, badly) in another.

I use a clarifying shampoo from Neutrogena to remove build up.
Works for me :flower:

I have very long hair (just past my waist) and I usually wash it every other or every third day (too hard to wash every day!) so I tend to get a lot of scalp build up, even though I don't use much product. I was wondering, how would you wash your hair with Evian? Do you do it in the shower or in the sink? And how many bottles would you need to get all the shampoo out? Sorry for the dumb questions but it sounds kind of difficult to be shampooing your hair whilst dumping a bottle of water on your head, but if it would help I'd give it a try!

^ well, maybe you should just use one bottle to give your hair a final rinse - after you already washed all the shampoo etc. out.

like gruveechik said.. I've also heard about the trick that mixing 1 third vinegar in 2/3 water and using that as a rinse at the end works to remove build up.

apple cider vinegar works wonders for my scalp, I don't shampoo much, I condition mostly and after the conditioner has set in I pour on the vinegar and do a light scrub. Then I rinse and condition again cause vinegar smells really strong lol. My scalp was free of any residue.
Baking soda mixed with shampoo works too though.

:yuk: I bought this clarifying shampoo from Pantene Pro V, and that gave me the WORST build up ever! Disgusting! I had to wash my hair with a different shampoo to get it out.
I'll try the apple vinegar trick, though!

man, that apple cider trick better work cause I just rinsed out my hair with it (and I rinsed well!) and it's got a definite funk....

please let me know about the apple cider vinegar...how is the smell...i worry that conditioning several times afterwards will only lead to more buildup...

^ I've tried and tested the apple cider vinegar trick now, and the hair (and bathroom) definately stinks of vinegar while it's still wet! :yuk: BUT.. :D don't dispair! It fades alot after it's dried and after a couple of hours the smell was basically gone. At least i didn't get any comments at all because of it.
And it does help the scalp.

I use paul mitchell shampoo 2 ( clarifying ). Not only does it remove ( well for me anyway ) 100 % of build up it has a gorgeous citrus scent to it. ^_^
