BULGARI has opened its first London hotel today - a luxurious 85-room residence in Knightsbridge. The jewellery brand also has hotels in Milan and Bali.

With silver as the predominant design theme, the interiors recall the brand's silversmith origins - whilst custom-made silk curtains feature classic Bulgari designs and the ballroom is dominated by two striking Bulgari chandeliers.

The brand's Italian heritage is also paid tribute to in the best possible way, with the elegant Il Ristorante - featuring an impressive menu concocted by head chef Robbie Pepin, as well as an extensive wine list. Additionally, a luxurious spa spanning two floors is one of the hotel's major highlights - crafted from onyx, teak and Vicenza stone and featuring 11 private treatment rooms, a 25-metre mosaic swimming pool and fitness area.

As if that wasn't enough, Bulgari has also done its research when it comes to sustainability. An ecologically-designed "green roof", energy-conserving intelligent lighting and the use of geothermal energy all ensure that guests can relax safe in the knowledge that every last detail has been taken care of.

The Bulgari Hotel & Residences, London
Due to open in Spring 2012, the Bulgari Hotel & Residences, London, is Prime Development’s debut project

This landmark new-build London hotel was designed for Bulgari by the renowned architectural firm Antonio Citterio, Patricia Viel & Partners, with Squire and Partners as the local architect for the project.

Located in the heart of Knightsbridge, the scheme is in an area that has undergone significant regeneration during the last 10 years, with nearby developments including The Knightsbridge Apartments, One Hyde Park and Lancelot Place. The Bulgari Hotel is set to further enhance this prestigious London district.

Hotel construction

The site’s relatively small footprint of 1,100m² presented the project team with considerable challenges. In addition, the requirement to complete the development in time for the 2012 London Olympics necessitated tight deadlines. To achieve this a ‘top down’ approach was adopted, which allowed the six basements (five of which equip the hotel with amenities and facilities) and the 10 upper floors to be constructed simultaneously.

Hotel design

Portland stone and bronze detailing, in an Italianate style, have been used to create a bold and simple exterior design which perfectly complements its surroundings. Innovative construction methods allow for a double-height ballroom, featuring a massive domed ceiling, and a double-height restaurant, that connects the ground floor to the first-level basement to create a dynamic open space.

The hotel’s 85 rooms and suites feature exquisite detailing throughout – from custom made silk curtains with patterns inspired by classic Bulgari jewellery designs to bedside table lamps inspired by Bulgari’s silver candlesticks. The silver theme continues through the hotel into the restaurant, bar and cigar shop. Stunning examples of Italian craftsmanship include two solid silver Bulgari chandeliers that create a dramatic centrepiece in the ballroom.

Aside from the pool, which looks positively glorious, I don't like it very much. I've always preferred classic architecture over modern, but modern architecture and design looks better, I think, when it's minimal. The design here looks busy, and not in a good way. And I'm sure the cost to stay rivals some of my favorite London hotels, where I'd much rather stay and which have classic British grandeur and/or charm.

Oh wow. I mean, maybe the service and atmosphere is impeccable and worth the price. It probably is. It's 5-star. Maybe it's an incredible hotel and it's just not suited to my taste. I just don't think it's worth it. $14,000 a night for a 1-bedroom suite?
