Marcel Wanders (July 2, 1963) is a Dutch industrial designer.

Marcel Wanders

By Elisabeth Salemme

Wanders, who was one of the early members of the cutting-edge design collective Droog, has once again expanded his repertoire. The prolific Dutchman spent February promoting the new Miami hotel Mondrian South Beach, for which he designed the interior. Wanders, 44, conceived the hotel as "Sleeping Beauty's castle," with gardens that serve as indoor and outdoor living spaces, featuring cabanas, tented play spaces for children and a hanging chandelier above the elegant pool. The hotel rooms, which resemble theater boxes, overlook the gardens so that "everyone has the best seat in the house," he says. The 2006 Elle Decoration designer of the year furnished the hotel with original pieces, such as lighting fixtures, sofas and even floors from his studio. Now that the hotel is complete, Wanders can focus on his next endeavors, including a line of accessories for Puma, due in stores this spring.

any more pictures of his work?

where is the text/article from? time?

i had to write some advertorial copy for a guy this week who does home renovations but has training in industrial design, so industrial design has been on my mind a bit lately and i'm curious to see how this guy is applying his industrial design to this hotel..

I think he is terrible interior designer...too tacky but some of his furniture peices are really lovely...

ChrissyM check out his website has loads of stuff or check out dezeen.com and search for his work...lots of articles about his work :)

thanks.. :flower:

his website is worth browsing around i think...
i wasn't all too impressed with the interiors i saw on there..

but, like you said lemeray some of the furniture is lovely, interesting and different ^_^

i remember his work caught my eye looking through some old design books
it was his odd chair made completely out of crochet doilies...

you see stiffened doilies all the time here, but not one as stiff and strong enough to support a sitting human being.. so it was an anomaly for me ^_^ but i read lately that it is coated with a synthetic resin to make it very hard. i think Marni creates jewellery out of that

another one i liked was his knotted chair
again i was surprised it could support a person
i think it's a special material for the rope

^those were the two pieces that intrigued me most when i was on the site earlier! :woot:

thanks gius

the doily chair doesn't look particularly comfortable but it's cool to look at...
it's another one of those items that looks as if it would leave imprints on your skin when you get up

women who wear shorts/skirts know what i'm talking about :p

The Stonehouse

^ you're so right. and hey both pieces of furniture can do that!
totally multi-function  i didn't even notice.. actually that is kind of an undesirable thing. :ninja:and if you cover it with a fabric then the design is lost... both furniture look hard to the skin

Out of his interiors, this one was interesting...^_^
I'd love to see the inside
