Now that is an unexpected choice! Daria is also in it.

Whether it’s industry newcomers like Binx Walton and Natalie Westling or famous faces like Daria Werbowy, we can always count on the models in Céline’s campaigns to bring the fashion house’s effortless cool-girl vibe to life. After all, if there’s anything that will make you want to empty your bank account for Phoebe Philo, it’s a beachy Werbowy on a skateboard à la 2011, right?

This spring, Philo is taking things in an unexpected—albeit equally dreamy—direction. In addition to enlisting the label’s longtime muse, Werbowy (who has appeared in no fewer than seven campaigns over the years), the designer has plucked a new face: Joan Didion. Didion might be a literary icon and author of classics like Play It as It Lays and Slouching Towards Bethlehem, but the famously shy writer has stayed away from the fashion spotlight, until now (unless you count an early, pre-fame stint as a features editor at Vogue). The first image debuted today on Vogue.com and shows Didion wearing a black turtleneck, oversize sunglasses, and a gold pendant necklace. Not only is the look a sartorial throwback to her days as a young writer, but it’s proof that just like Didion, this uniform of stripped-down classics has a coolness—and a great style—that never fades.

I don't like it. Old is not always gold.

Phoebe is really into women who look like her, isn't she? Daria, (young) Joan Didion. I bet she likes Greta Garbo too!

first thought - damn that looks like a comfortable sweater dress. if it's soft enough for grandma, it's soft enough for me.

love the pendant.

looking forward to Daria's inevitable shots.

I like it, very unexpected and kinda cute!

Teller? Really? after the terrific Tyrone Lebon campaign?
At this point, Daria is the queen of "in the row" campaigns...After Chanel, Celine!
I think Joan Didion being the face of Celine will add a caché to the "intellectual" side of Celine. Good for them :)

It's been awhile since someone in the fashion world pulled a gimmick that is... ya know... actually FABULOUS! Joan looks legitimately cool.

they really need to change the concept a bit. seriously it's becoming even more bland than dior's campaigns

+ Marie-Agnès Gillot & Freya Lawrence

At Céline, the ballet flats Phoebe Philo paraded on its runway last September turned out to be a clue: Marie-Agnès Gillot, a dancer and choreographer with the Paris Opera Ballet, appears in the brand’s spring campaign, slated to break in an array of February fashion titles. But the diversity of Philo’s spring collection — spanning sharply tailored looks and retro florals — is reflected in the casting. Another surprising personality, 80-year-old American author Joan Didion, also posed for photographer Juergen Teller, along with teenage model Freya Lawrence.

Amazing move from Phoebe and such a great slap in the face for the shallowness and vacuity that the fashion world has become. Fantastic casting and super cool shots.

I want to live in Freya's picture. The beach, the wind, the colors, the dress, the airy feeling... SO FRESHHHHHHHHH.

The layout in that picture is UH-MAZING! The white color, the position of logo and the size of the font are just perfect.

Love the photography, locations and range of women. If they´d incorporate color diversity this would be the greatest campaign :)

Celine campaign's use of teenage models always confuses me. You always hear how Celine is for adult women... Freya looks like she's 12. There are already too many sources for the "beauty of adolescence" or whatever they call it.

I'm with you, her shots feel wildly out of place.

I love those outside shots. That blue! So dreamy...but Marie-Agnes Gillot in that white dress is more Terry Richardson for Purple than Celine. And Freya? Really?

I think that Celine has a big market of teenage girls who get their rich parents to buy them the bags and accessories...
