We had the pleasure of spending the afternoon with Canadian model and blogger Cailin Hill from Elite. Currently residing in Brooklyn, you can follow her trials and tribulations (complete with animated gifs) as a model on her Tumblr, The Model Burn Book.
How did you become a model?
A couple of years back I was working two jobs, one in a mall & another in Starbucks. I got scouted at both jobs in the same week which I thought was a sign I should give it a go.
What were you doing before modelling?
Studying fashion merchandising. That’s why I decided to give modelling a go. I thought rather than sitting in a classroom reading a text book about the job modelling would give me the chance to actually meet the people that I was studying and get experience in the industry.
What do you like to do when you’re not modelling?
Blogging. I love my Tumblr, it keeps me sane! I reblog things I see and find interesting as well as posting model related pieces such as conversations and experiences I’ve had.
What type of music do you like?
A$AP Rocky, rap, hip-hop and Patrick Watson which is completely different.
Do you ever dance even if there’s no music playing?
Yeah but I mean it looks a lot better when it’s on!
What books do you enjoy reading?
I’m currently reading a book called Imagine which is about creative thinking. I’m finding it amazing and it’s definitely giving me an insight into the way I think.
What shows did you walk in last season?
I’m more editorial based so don’t do that many but I did Moschino Cheap & Chic last season which was really fun.
Where has been your favourite place you’ve travelled?
Tokyo, I love it there.
What’s your favourite place to hang out in London?
I mainly stay around Hackney and Shoreditch. I have friends here so when I’m over they tell me lots of things to do.
Do you believe in ghosts?
Not necessarily but I wouldn’t want to be stranded in one of those haunted houses! I do have a whole bunch of witchcraft stuff at home, my bedroom looks like something out of The Craft but I just like the pieces, I’m not messing with any of that stuff!
Do you have a particular photographer you would like to work with?
David Bailey. I want to hear all his stories!
What’s your favourite item of clothing?
I don’t have one thing in particular but I love seventies floor length floral dresses. They are almost like comfort blankets, I always feel relaxed and good in them.
How many tattoos do you have?
Six. I really want to get more but you have to be careful as it effects which clients will want you.
What’s been your favourite fashion moment?
That’s really hard! On my first day in London I shot Topshop which was cool. It was so surreal to see myself blown up so big and have my image all over the store. When I saw them in the window I didn’t know whether to go in!
What would you like to do in the future?
I want to write screen plays and also I’m interested in becoming an art director. Being a model allows you to see what happens and learn how things work in the fashion industry so I would like to use that and do something with my mind.
Would you rather be attacked by a big bear or a swarm of bees?
Bear – you can’t play dead for bees!
