Calvin Klein Picks Stocky Swedish Soccer Star as New Model

Fashion Wire Daily NY August 22, 2003 - By now most of you have heard of David Beckham, but Freddie Ljungberg?

Despite his wanton obscurity in the U.S., Calvin Klein has apparently chosen the combative Swedish 26-year-old midfielder with London's most successful club Arsenal as the face for an upcoming ad campaign.

Ljungberg, a bachelor who does not boast a pop trophy wife like Posh Spice, is best known for frequently changing his hair throughout seasons -- some weeks it's aubergine, others canary yellow -- and for getting in an odd punch up with his own teammates. The stocky centerfielder once decked Olof Mellberg, his fellow teammate on the Swedish national squad, after what he felt was an overly aggressive tackle during practice before last year's World Cup.

The house of Klein declined to confirm that Freddie had indeed signed to do an ad campaign with the house. A spokesman for the house told FWD, "We are still in the process of discussing this. Nothing is official."

However, Freddie was spotted in lower Manhattan last week and an insider informed FWD that Steven Klein has photographed the soccer star for the label.

The jury is still out on whether Freddie will make as big an impression as his predecessor, Australian hunk model Travis Fimmel. Not that Ljungberg isn't a bit of a clotheshorse himself; he was voted the most stylish man in the world by Swedish Elle last year.

Freddie shares an apartment in London with a brother who studies fashion and is known to favor more outlandish designers like Roberto Cavalli. His outrageous looks have not gone unnoticed by opposing fans, who frequently greet him with an unrepeatable version of Village People's "Go West."

Should you run into Freddie you might like to know that his nickname is Sid, which is due to his love of punk music and the fact that he looks a bit like Sid Vicious, but with better skin.
