CANDICE ON HER DENIM DESIGN DEBUT

vogue.co.uk
CANDICE SWANEPOEL has turned her hand to designing, with a capsule denim collection for Mother. The South African model - who told us last year that she is attracted to projects that allow her to "help in some way" - agreed to work on the collection in part because it benefits a cause close to her heart: African-based charity Mothers2mothers. We grabbed 10 minutes with the busy Victoria's Secret Angel to talk denim icons, buying the perfect jean, and making a difference.
Tell us about how the collaboration came about?
"Mother approached me with this project, and after I met the team I knew it was the perfect partnership not only to try my hand at designing my own line and learning what it takes, but to also help a great cause at the same time."
You must be approached about lots of things, why did this project excite you?
"I seldom pass up an opportunity to learn about something new. It excited me because they gave me complete freedom to make the denim I love. I chose everything from the washes, fits and styles to directing the campaign shoot. I got to put so much of myself into it, which was rewarding but what made it more so is that I also got to help a very noble cause in South Africa that is dedicated to eradicating paediatric HIV."
You told us before that you want to work on projects that are doing good as well as looking good - like Bottletop - tell us about the charity this collection will benefit?
"I chose this incredible charity Mothers2mothers, a non-profit organisation based out of South Africa that works to prevent the transition of HIV from mothers to their babies. To date the organisation has reached 1.2 million HIV positive mothers and their babies. Like Bottletop, Mothers2mothers is based out of Africa - when I do something for charity I like it to also help the people in my country. It's as special to me as it is the people we can save."
Tell us about the design process - what aspects did you get involved in, and what did you most enjoy?
"I first had a look at the denim I had in my closet, what were my absolute favourites and what I would change to make them perfect. Most of what I found were old Levi's and denim that I had worn in over the years. I was inspired by the iconic supermodels of the Nineties and their off-duty denim chic style, as well as by the gorgeous girl next door that looks simple and elegant in jeans and a white T-shirt. So I started the collection inspiration and took it to the team where I had to go through all the different washes. I was extremely specific on making them look vintage and slightly worn in, with the right fading. The fit was also very important to me, so we perfected my favourite jeans, which are mostly high-waist. I enjoyed the entire process because it was something completely new, I learned a lot about my own taste and how specific I am when it comes to putting your name on something. I love it though; I hope everyone will love the collection."
Whose denim moments were you looking at for this collection - and who are your denim icons?
"I did look at denim through many different time periods. I loved the Seventies, Eighties and Nineties. There is an old Pepsi campaign with Cindy Crawford, which inspired me as well as Kate Moss, and Drew Barrymore in the Nineties, and then some came from my own street style."
Do you remember a time in your teenage years where denim made you feel cool - maybe your first pair that you customised?
"I do remember. There is really no other explanation for a great pair of denims, comfortable yet sexy. I used to be a big fan of the hipster jeans which meant my mom was sewing every pair in the crotch area so I could wear them as low as possible. Thank god my taste has changed!"
Which is your favourite style from the collection you've created with Mother?
"I love the Stunner in Hijacking the Runway."
Many women find denim tricky to shop for - what are your secrets to buying a great pair of jeans?
"Shopping for jeans can be annoying but you have to try until you find the right ones. I often buy a pair because I like the wash and feel - then I just have them altered slightly to fit me."
Do you think this collection will be a one-off or might there be more to come if this one is a success?
"If this one is a success I would love to do more. I'm lucky that I've had amazing training in all the years of modeling. I've probably tried on a million pairs of jeans. Models really get to see what works and what doesn't. My personal denim has been through many adventures with me, and good denim gets better and better with more wear."
