The girls from Ipanema were once known chiefly for their microscopic ‘thong’ bikinis and a slick of suntan oil.
But, as Claro Rio Summer Fashion week, which opened in Brazil’s capital today is showing, the well-dressed beach babe these days needs another accessory – a beaded waistcoat.
Top Brazilian model, Isabeli Fontana, opened the city’s newest seaside catwalk spectacular, in a turquoise bandeau bikini worn with a multicoloured beaded waistcoat and what are known here as “colosseum sandals”, the Rio equivalent of the gladiator.
The ensemble was designed by Carlos Miele, one of 16 leading Brazilian swimwear, resort and holiday designer brands showing collections for next spring/summer.
The show was staged on a catwalk laid over cobblestones at the historic Copacabana military fort which overlooks the world-famous beach of the same name.
Miele, whose designs blend Brazilian hand-crafted techniques with 21st century style, also showed hand-crocheted tunics, embroidered lace babydolls and tie-dyed chiffon kaftans in fuchsia and white, to accompany his new swimwear looks.
More dressed-up daywear included appropriately military and nautical-style, gilt-buttoned "matelot" trousers and pencil skirts, worn with white shirts, and ffloaty mini-chiffon dresses featuring beading, fringing, sequins and floral-appliqués.
