Some old interview

After months full of politics, moviepremieres and campaigning in Estonia, the ACEL was happy to get the thoughts about her new lifeturns from one of the world’ s most famous Estonians – supermodel Carmen Kass.

Carmen Kass was born September 14, 1978, in Tallinn, Estonia. Raised by her mother in Paide -- where Carmen was probably the only fashionable and glamorous thing about the city -- the blue-eyed brunette won the Miss Paide crown and secured her royal position as Miss Järvamaa afterwards. A 14-year-old Carmen had already received recognition by the time she was discovered in a supermarket in Tallinn by an Italian modelling scout. She was ready to set her sights higher and go for the Miss Estonia title, but the offer to fly to Milan to jump start a modelling career seemed like a more glamorous and lucrative option. Despite her mother's disapproval of Carmen being whisked away to Milan, Carmen found a way to go by forging her mother's signature of "approval". Carmen was off to Milan for the next three months, ready to start her career as one of today's supermodels.

Carmen moved to Paris at the age of 18. She received exposure on the cover of magazines worldwide, namely L'Officiel and Vogue (France) in 1997, Elle (Australia), Image (UK), Madame Figaro, Numero France, Vogue (France), and Vogue (US) in 1999.
In 1999, Carmen was also one of the fashion runways' hottest commodities. She strutted down the catwalks for the top designers in the world such as: Alberta Ferretti, Anna Sui, BCBG, Bill Blass, Calvin Klein, Chanel, Christian Dior, DKNY, Dolce & Gabbana, Gianfranco Ferré, Gianni Versace, Gucci, Jill Stuart, MaxMara, Michael Kors, Moschino, Nicole Miller, Prada, Oscar de la Renta, Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, Gianni Versace, Louis Vuitton, and Valentino.

Although now Carmen has become a sought-after model for big advertising campaigns, we can't say she started small either. She has posed in advertisements for Calvin Klein, Chanel, Donna Karan, General Motors, Guy Laroche, Krizia, and Versace.
It's clear that even off the chessboard, Carmen's making all the right moves as the 2000 VH1/Vogue's "Model of the Year" (Gisele Bundchen's successor) and as the quintessential beauty of the post-waif generation.

1.You begun your career as a model being young and stubborn (forging Your mother’ signature) and reached to Paris at 18. What are Your impressions from that time? Were there moments when You thought to give it all up?

Obviously every beginning is tough, when You run from one place to another, your shoes in your hands, hoping that You will stand out and somebody will offer You a job. Being young and inexperienced it is easy to be deceived or become desperate in every type of competitive business. I had perhaps a little bit more luck and I conquered my fears.

2.The ”icebergs” of the modelworld – extreme diets, chainsmoking and addiction to coffee, light and hard narcotics, the pleasant and unpleasant attention of rich men, not to mention that the young ”rookie” model if often deceived financially. How have You been able to avoid these kind of things?

A lot of the above listed are actually myths, every occupation has its specific character. I would lie if I’ d say that it is easy to make it in the world when You are 14 and do not know a word of English. But if one has chosen that path it must be walked through. I haven’ t become the victim of diets nor any other type of addictions. I have inherited plenty of good things from my parents I guess. At the end of the day models are just human beings whose success often depends on their being normal, not on their selfsacrifices nor continous whims.

3.Many models have found an alternative career after finishing their careers as supermodels, often still connected to the industry – Elle McPherson and her lingerie line, Helena Christensen and photography…You don´t possess similar ambitions? It is known that You do spin a little real estate business in Estonia?

I will find more ten years of lucrative work in modelling, but, yes, in a sense it has already depleted for me. I already own a modelagency which operates both in Estonia and Lithuania and I have plenty of businessideas. My goal is that my businessactivities and the money I´ve earned would be beneficial to others, because at one point You reach a limit where Your own necessities are all met.

4.What do You prefer to wear at Your free time?

I wear clothes to feel comfortable. To be free of heels is a pure joy not for only models but every woman I guess.

5.What do You like to do on Your free time? What do You read, what do You watch? Where do You like to go out both in NY and Estonia? Have You also visited Portugal, Lisbon, if yes, what are Your impressions and memories of that?

I am not a very keen clubber, although NY has the world´s best nightclubs. I prefer to hang out with my friends, playing chess and just chatting. I have visited Portugal, but my memories are more work-related since I did not have time to look around much.

6.You have been studying acting for a while now and already acted in some films, are American and Estonian filmmaking ways very different (besides the financial part)?

I have positive experiences from both sides. After all it is important that the team is good. Obviously there is more money in the States, but more cheaper indie-films have its unique charm aswell.

7.Do You hope to act more in films or are You also drawn to the theatre? Do You go to the theatre often, also in Estonia? What have You liked in particular?

I have studied acting in theatreschool, but I haven´t yet aspired to work on stage. I am a beginner as an actor and even if I have some dreams it is better to accomplish something before publicising it.

8.All of us experience both pleasant and unpleasant moments in life. What has made You feel bitterness? And what helped You overcome it? And at the same time the opposite also – what makes You feel happy?

I can bravely state that I am a happy person and this is guaranteed by the good people around me. There are always setbacks, but I have gained enough experience to evaluate situations calmly and not to take everything too emotionally.

9.Talking about Estonia – You visit it quite often, but rarely enough that something there always changes – what has surprised You both in a good and in a bad way?

I come to Estonia after every few months, there has never been a longer pause than six months in a row. And since I always visit other places besides Tallinn aswell, on the contrary to most of the tourists, I do not have the illusion that glasshouses mean the rapid development of Estonia. The rural regions are in a very bad state and unfortunately the people there also lack motivation to accomplish something.

10.Does Your (toyfoxterrier) Spanky travel with You everywhere, was that race a conscious choice?

It was not my conscious choice, Spanky was a gift from my friends, but I do always try to take him with me if it is possible.

11.You becoming a member of the Estonian politicalparty Res Publica, so-called going to the politics, came as a sudden surprise to a lot of people. Have You pondered about that already for some time or was that in a sense sudden for You too? What made You take that decision?

True, I had not taken it (politics) as a realistic engagement ever before that. But when the proposal came, the time seemed to be right. As we can see the time was really ripe for changes inside Res Publica, so for me it was before anything a very interesting experience to see how do things work in Estonian politics. I do not rule out that I will continue engaging in politics, but in municipal level or in the Estonian Parliament I am much less use than my 10 years of living abroad would be in the European Parliament and at the level of international politics.

12.Your idea to candidate to the European Parliament made Estonia buzz and often unpleasantly. Do You know what the “whiners” said about You, not to mention some cleaver dude who made a pseudowebpage of Res Publica with Your nude photos. And adding the narcoticsscandal envolving Your sister… Did You expect that kind of reaction?

Envy is only human and it was expected that my going to the politics will give an opportunity, in addition to the superficial scornful reaction, to a lot of people to express their own bitterness. But at the same time I do not think that Estonians are especially envious in comparison to the other nationalities. Perhaps in a small society it just shows more. The people I met during the campaign were all very supportive, especially incentive was the positive attitude of my foreign friends. That of course is a sign of something as well. The media act the same in most countries, the Estonian scales are just smaller and details become bigger.

13.Relaying on different statistics there are more than 160 000 Estonians living abroad. For the Estonians living abroad You have always been one of the so-called businesscards of Estonia which can be pointed out proudly. What would You like to say/wish to the Estonians living abroad?

I value in them very much the fact that their sense of nationality has not disappeared and that they can unite and act together. It does not always take place in perhaps the most wise manner, but it is nice that they do not forget their origin. And I do not forget it either if I have to live the next ten years in abroad.

she's such an icon. i love carmen! gorgeous legs too! and her walk . . .*melts* . . its perfection!

Nice to see her open Ferragamo...I was just about to post that...hopefully she'll do all the major shows :flower:

I didn't know that Carmen owned a Modelling agency, I wonder if she hads scouted any names?

I met Carmen quite unexpectedly two years ago and I'm happy to report that she is very nice although somewhat more quiet than I would have thought...might have been a long day. She is much taller and slimmer than I expected too; for some reason I always remember endless legs in jeans (with heels, of course!) and very slim hips...VERY beautiful!! I've been in love every since!
(Of course, she was with Maggie Rizer at the time so I like to keep and open mind about these things..!!):p
