It can look quite elegant on the right woman whether real or faux whatever your preference. The politics of fur are quite a complex topic so I wont get into it but I enjoy the look when it is worn/used in an understated manner. Too much fur can look comical or overdone, a bit of a caricature of wealth or elegance. I like it best when its ironic or casual.

I can't tell the difference between real and faux most of the time. The technology is amazing now.

^ which should really help diminish the use of real fur. but oh well. i don't really like the olsens in fur. something about them when they wear it that makes fur look... less valuable. i don't hate them, i'm just not a fan of them in fur. here's someone who i think pulls it off effectively: nicole kidman at the metropolitan models event in 2003. such a classic and elegant way to wear fur (also wore a fur trimmed chinoiserie dress to the 1997 oscars).
