They have changed their merchandising strategy too since the Karl days. There is no way she get fired, I mean if you been to any Chanel store in past two years, you will see how crazily she succeeded, it's unbelievable that Chanel maybe the only luxury brand that has a long waiting line at any spot, not even Karl or Hermes achieved that.
In Karl's era, I could just walk in and appreciate the collection casually and peacefully. Well, not anymore, I need to book two days in advance just to get in and everything got sold out even before displayed. Customers are fighting for items!
With Chanel's price strategy and Virginie's mediocre yet somehow wildly accepted design, Chanel is really marching into this gigantic cash cow with no soul.....
Well, Chanel is always trying to be on the level of Hermes in leather department, I would say be careful what you wish for
Karl’s collections were heavily themed so a lot of pieces were pre-ordered, a lot of times already sold out but he had the approach of a designer which means sometimes proposing pieces that customers didn’t know they wanted or didn’t want at all (Velcro Chanel jackets).
With Virginie, the « designer » approach is not there anymore. She does a Chanel version of what people can buy everywhere. And that means, easy pieces with logos in there, consistent cut on tailoring and all over easy merchandise.
We like to compare Virginie to MGC but they are totally different in a way. Dior is speaking more to a conservative or grown up customer than Chanel lately. This collection for example is totally money in the bank for Chanel. Millenials and the Asian market will eat this right away and it will also perform well in the US.
I don’t know if they will sell those tshirts at 4K but an overpriced Chanel tshirt is still less expensive than 10K classic bag or a 7K tweed jacket.
The irony to think that the sold out tshirt from the Cuba collection was sold 850€.
Virginie is lucky because Chanel has never been out of the fashion/luxury conversation in the last 30+ years. She doesn’t have to drive trends and the image of the brand is so strong now that no matter how tacky her work can be, the machine is strong enough to support that.
They have lost some customers from the Karl days but they have also gained a lot of new ones.
Personally, my sensibility is more towards Vuitton and Loewe when it comes to this type of luxury RTW but they are nowhere near Chanel in terms of positioning.
It’s funny that social media has this obsession about Quiet Luxury and yet, one of the blockbuster house is selling tacky clothes with logos on it to the richest…Because Chanel RTW is more expensive than any « Quiet Luxury » brand around.
