Chanel Iman

it is sad--becasue i think she is a targt for her ethnicity. suvi was pushed to the top based on NOTHING. sh ecan barely pose, but is that as controversial? i really think mos tof the peopel all hotheaded over her success are afromeicans too. i liken the hatred to the anti-beyonce meovement.

I hate to think the animosity is based solely on race. Perhaps from some, though.

I just think the main qualm people have about her on the cover is her "lack of credentials" compared to other models. But, again, Vogue must have felt the need to have at least one minority on the cover; there is always one token black model on the supermodel/top model covers. And race has a lot to do with why there aren't black any models (not just Chanel) that get work like the other girls on the cover. As I said in the magazine thread, which other black model could they pick? Kinee, Mimi, Jaunel, and other young black high fashion models have much less press behind them and are no more "successful" than Chanel. The only black model that would fit, as far as exposure goes, with the young models on the cover is Liya.

I also think Chanel's Asian heritage contributed to her being chosen. It was a "kill two birds with one stone" decision to include a black/Asian model there instead of one black, one Asian (like Du Juan or Hye Park).

Not that that's good, but even if those were the reasons Chanel was chosen, hopefully she gains popularity and continues to improve as a model. I've never seen a model get so much unmerited disapproval.

its defeinetly chanel---- look at hte cheekbones(too broad of a face for liya), plus her skin is lighter than liya's. besides the title next next top models...liya was alreadya top model.

^ are you sure that's Chanel and not Liya?

It doesn't look like Liya. Plus, she was on the September 2004 cover of top models. She's already attained that status, whereas this cover is about "the wold's next top models", younger ones gaining popularity.

^I realized that when I took a good look at the picture, plus I recognized her nose. Liya's is more refined, while Chanel's is wider.

I am happy for her!

Looks like Chanel's got the quickest moving carreer of any model since Karolina Kurkova (who got a cover at 16). No model has ever graced the cover of American Vogue without having a great career in front of her. :woot:

Guys i have tried to be civil about the whole thing, but i am so sick of the verbal swipes people are taking at Chanel, its all too much, while they arent racial comments, the reasons as to why people feel she doesnt deserve it, is based on a RACIAL issue. Why cant people who have such a problem with her appearance on the cover understand that?

^Not likely. I think sepia already explained what's going on exactly - everyone wanted to see their fave on the cover and they can't see the writing on the wall - Chanel is one of this season's biggest stars so it makes perfect sense that she is on the cover. Her competitors are Lara, Suvi and Iekeliene - none of whom have already appeared in Vogue like Chanel already had. The fact is that Chanel is this season's fastest rising star according to American Vogue.

i recon a lot of you are also jealous lol.

she's young and already a Vogue cover model. jealous much??

go on, admit it!!!

Malcolm Harris to honor model with eponymous award at Yale

Monday, April 09, 2007

(NEW HAVEN) Yale University will name their annual Sankofa Trailblazer Award after New York-based fashion designer Malcolm Harris of Mal Sirrah, Inc. Going forward, the Sankofa student group’s Trailblazer Award will be renamed the The Malcolm Harris Trailblazer Award, and will be given this year to Yale sophomore Tamara Leacock during an award ceremony and fashion show to be held on April 20 in New Haven, CT. As a result, this award will now be given to the Yale University student that epitomizes the mission statement of the Mal Sirrah brand. Harris, an FIT graduate who helped establish Designers For Darfur last year with Lydia Hearst, will in turn present the Fashion Trailblazer Award to 16-year-old Ford Models sensation Chanel Iman for “displaying pride, grace, and style during her skyrocketing year,” which will culminate with an upcoming May Vogue cover unveiling the industry’s top new models. The Sankofa group is a creative collective of student fashion designers, models, and artists working together to expand the definition of global fashion beyond its traditional Western image.

this thread is going down faster than Stam in Chloe heels

Can we stop the little arguments and get back to Chanel!

Surely she will now get the chance to have interesting editorials and we will see more of her potential!

^ LOL! Thank you, I love Chanel and people need to just look at her as being a beautiful model and not a "black model". I hate that color and ethnicity is still an issue in the 21st century.

^ i totally agree, but it will always be in an issue. there are some ignorant people in this world who still conform to only white european standards and it's a shame, there are beautiful people of every race. i wish more people could understand that. on that note, i think Chanel iin vogue is another step to breaking down these racial barriers in the fashion industry

Unfortunately, it is, and I expect it always will be. I'm still shocked Vogue is including a black model on its cover twice the same year. That hasn't happened in a long time.
