Charlotte Wiggins

By TAYLOR HARRIS

“When I first started two years ago, I didn’t really want to tell my friends,” says 18-year-old Charlotte Wiggins. But discretion wasn’t really an option once she landed a Burberry campaign in 2010. “It was plastered on this huge billboard right by school,” says Wiggins, who is repped by Supreme. “It was massive, like 20 stories tall.” Wiggins wasn’t exactly prepared for the exposure. “The Burberry campaign was my first job ever, so I was definitely surprised when all of a sudden people started coming up to me like, ‘I think I’ve seen you before.’” After taking a couple years to finish school, the Liverpool-native started modeling full-time in October. The fall collection season was her first full round of shows, during which she popped up on the runways of Dolce & Gabbana, Celine and Nina Ricci, among others.

How did you get scouted?
There’s this thing in England, in Birmingham, called the Clothes Show. It’s just like little booths with clothes and sales. I went with the arty girls from school and an agent from Select, my mother agency, came up to me. He was this huge, 6-foot, 2-inch guy and he bolted towards me as soon as I came in the door. He kept trying to get me to go with him to the agency right then and there. At first I was pretty weirded out.

Did you ever think about modeling growing up?
Not at all. I grew up playing sports, football — er, soccer I mean. I wasn’t into fashion. I wore jeans and a T-shirt with my Vans everyday. People would tell me I should think about modeling, though, because I was really tall (5-foot, 10-inches). But you think people are just saying that.

You just finished your first full fashion month. What was most surprising?
I knew it was going to be busy, but I didn’t know how little sleep I would get. I don’t know what I would do without my skinny latte every day. I also have a size eight foot, which I didn’t think was small until fashion week. The shoes were always a size or two bigger, which was odd. The worst is when you have to wear a pump with no straps. I’ve duct taped my feet in so they wouldn’t pop out.

What did you do when you were done?
Went home. I think I slept for a good day, a full 24 hours. Sleeping in my own bed — that was a luxury. My mom cooked a big stew, just what I needed.

What’s something you’d like to achieve in your career?
I really want to walk for Chanel someday. I would love, love, love to do that. But I try not to set specific goals, because that’s how you get disappointed. I’d honestly just like to do some nice shoots, hopefully some campaigns. I think that is what some people lose sight of: Modeling — if it doesn’t work out, it’s not the end of the world.

 That, thanks for posting Stereo_Flo.

I enjoy her career, she's not over-exposed, but one could hardly call her underrated after her Burberry exclusive, walking Proenza last season, Celine this year. It's an interesting thing, I don't think she's the one being choosy like say, Mackenzie Drazan, but it seems she's a diamond in the rough who each year manages to find a show to really shine at.

I do wish she'd get more editorial work, because I think she is KILLER in print.
