How were you initially discovered and was modeling always your dream growing up?

Chiharu Okunugi (CO I was scouted in Tokyo when I was 16 years old. I didn’t necessarily dream about being a model at the time as I was still trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my life.

Where do you hail from and are models a big deal in your culture?

CO: I’m originally from Tokyo, Japan. Models are not as big in Japan as they are in New York. In Japan there are more commercial models and less high fashion girls.

What was your first major modeling break that was the game-changer in your career?

CO: My first big modeling job was the Prada exclusive about 2 years ago. It definitely changed my career for the better and I’m so grateful.

Which key industry figure would you most like to collaborate with and why?

CO: I love Peter Lindbergh. He’s an amazing photographer and creates beautiful images.

What are the most important attributes required for success in modeling?

CO: I think it’s important to be tough in this industry. Fashion week and can get crazy with all the casting, fittings and shows.

What is your definition of a “Model as Muse”, and which model are you most inspired by?

CO: To me, a “Model as Muse” means to be an inspiration. The models I’m inspired by are Ai Tominaga and Tao Okamoto.

Describe your street style in three words and what is your most treasured wardrobe item?

CO: Trendy, simple, & chic. My most treasured wardrobe item is my black Fendi shoulder bag. I love it!

Of the four major fashion capitals, which city best encapsulates your fashion aesthetic and how?

CO: Paris! It’s a beautiful city and I am inspired by the street style. Everyone is so fashionable.

What is the coolest thing that a fan has done for you?

CO: Yesterday, I got a USB drive in the mail from a fan. I haven’t checked to see what’s on it yet but that was definitely different!

Predict the next big modeling/casting trend for the S/S 2015 season?

CO: I’m not sure but I’m excited to see what designers will come up with for next year.

What is the most challenging aspect of modeling as a profession?

CO: It’s probably all the traveling. I get bad jetlag sometimes and you always have to show up to jobs and castings fresh and energized.

Which do you prefer runway or print modeling, and why?

CO: I prefer runway because the shows are so exciting and lively.

When I’m walking down the runway, I’m thinking….

CO: Have fun!

What was the most memorable part of your Crash editorial shoot?

CO: The team was great to work with and I loved all the clothes. Being on the beach was great even though it was SO hot out that day.

When my modeling days are over, I want to remembered as the girl who….

CO: Loved her job and always had fun.
