CONTACT LENS: Club Monaco’s fall ad campaign mined Benjamin Millepied’s growing fame as the male dancer in “Black Swan” and Natalie Portman’s fiance. The retailer’s spring campaign won’t reach the same heights of buzz-worthiness, but may illicit small sighs of recognition from those in the know. An eclectic, multi-generational group of style-setters shot by Ryan McGinley includes Lou Doillon, Lauren Hutton and Scottish singer Annie Lennox’s daughter, Tali. There’s also Rachel Chandler, a New York photographer and D.J.; Brandee Brown, a photographer and filmmaker; Domino Kirke, daughter of Free/Bad Company drummer Simon Kirke; The Virgins’ frontman, Donald Cummings, and Jade Berreau, a model and the mother of Secret Magic Nico Snow, the daughter she had with the late artist Dash Snow. Known for capturing the free spirit of youth in outdoor settings, McGinley took portraits in his studio of young people for a 2010 exhibition at New York’s Team Gallery. Club Monaco’s campaign takes a similar tack, but finds the subjects in a photo booth, where they mug, laugh and create unexpected (presumably) spontaneous moments for the camera.
