Codie Young

^Yep, I'm pretty sure the Suggestions supplement comes with the main magazine.

ON A Thursday afternoon, the Coast’s new member of fashion royalty answers the door barefoot.

Peaceful Palmview is a world away from the catwalks of Europe, and standing at the door is Codie Young, the Australian Vogue covergirl who, in just six months, has blitzed the runways of the world’s fashion capitals.

This month, as proof of her international appeal, Codie is the covergirl for Vogue in Italy.

But at home the willowy blonde is not wearing a scrap of makeup, her hair loose and no fuss.

It’s been a whirlwind 10 months since the Daily last sat down with the 18-year-old and it’s been a steep learning curve for Codie.

What have you been up to since you left in January?

You have castings at shows and that takes up until the end of February and a bit of March.

Then you go back for “campaign” season, which is the reason why you do the shows because you want to be signed by a major brand.

So you want to try and get campaigns. And then after campaigns it’s editorial season for magazines. And then it’s holidays.

How many runway shows do you do and what was your favourite? Surely Vera Wang bridal or Chanel must have been up there?

I did about 40 shows in total. Vera Wang bridal show was really cool. It was a very strange show because they had no music.

What did it feel like? (Laughs) I was like, okay – anyone can marry me right here, right now. Anyone can marry me. I couldn’t breathe in it but it was an amazing dress.

Chanel isn’t really my type of look. I would def do the show again but the clothes aren’t my type of style.

An international model must earn quite a bit?

People think we earn a lot more than we do.

Say, for example, a girl earns $10,000 a week. You don’t really earn that much, but say you did. Really a model probably only gets half of that. 20% to 30% goes to your agency, and then in America there is 30% tax. After that you have to pay for all your expenses.

This year was very expensive for me. I was in debt for ages, my visa was so expensive. I had to get social security numbers and all this stuff.

Flights are so expensive. Everyone thinks agencies pay for everything but they don’t pay for anything.

Some shows, especially in New York, they don’t pay you in money, they pay you in clothes, which kind of sucks because I prefer the money.

Why wouldn’t you want to be paid in designer labels?

When I first started to model I used to think, “no one is going to buy these things. This top costs $500”, but overseas is very different to Australia. We like cheap stuff here.

I’m a classic example. I love bargain shopping. I don’t like to buy designer stuff. It’s really expensive and I like things that are one of a kind and that’s why I prefer to go to vintage stores and op shops because no one has that stuff.

So where is home?

I’m more based in Europe because I work more there. I don’t really have a very commercial look at all so that’s probably why I work the least in New York, but I don’t live anywhere. I live in a suitcase.

And you can’t stop working even when you’re at home on holidays?

On Tuesday I fly down for a Myer fashion show, rehearsal on Wednesday and then the show on Thursday. It’s good to do stuff for your home country. That’s why I like doing things for Vogue Australia. They’re like family.

What’s your plan for the summer fashion season when you return overseas at the end of this month?

I want to do more shows than I did last year. There isn’t any show in particular I’m after, just better ones. If I get a major campaign with a major designer I’d be happy.

On the eve of her official Australian return on the runway for Myer alongside Jennifer Hawkins and Jess Hart, Codie will answer your questions live on the Sunshine Coast Daily website on Monday between 10am and 11am.

10:17

There are a lot of things that are hard about being a model. being away from family 90% of the year can be hard; but skype is the best!! and we work really long hours, we really do work a lot.

Congrats on the 13 pages in Vogue Italia! You've walked for Chanel, Vera - almost all the greats. the fashion world seems so glamorous and unachieveable. What is it really like being on the inside?

10:22
codie young:
thanks :) its definitally not what everyone thinks it is! there are definitally some perks to the job as there are downsides but that also applies to any job! from the inside to me and most models its just a job :) we dont see it as a glamorous sort of thing haha it sjust a job

10:24
codie young:

What's your advice to someone trying to break into the world of fashion?

10:26
codie young:
my advice would be, to send digitals of you with no makeup on, to agencies with your measurements and see what the response is.

Love your look girl, you are such a great canvas and chameleon for stylists and photographers! But there has to be something you wish you were good at but aren't. Do you wish you could sing, dance, juggle?

If you hadn't got into modelling, what do you think you would have done instead?

10:35
codie young:
I'm really passionate about my visual arts!!!!!!!!!!! I love to paint and draw faces and hands and anything I'm facinated by! later on when I have finish modelling I'm going to go study some sort of visual arts degree. I'm so excited to go! recently I have also discovered that I love history due to all the travel I do. so I might study that as well

What was your first non-modelling job?

10:38
codie young:
I'm only 18 so I really didn't work much before I was discovered as I was still in school. I worked at a bakery for a while but I didn't really like it, so once i was discovered I quit and then focused on my schooling and modelling.

Were you surprised or hurt by the intense scrutiny over your weight by the world after the Topshop incident?

10:40
codie young:
at first I was hurt because I new I wasnt anorexic! and also topshop was one of my favourite jobs I did as I was shooting with one of my best friends jess. I understand people will judge me as I'm a model. but to accuse someone of a critical illness is very unfair.

Congrats on your success and think you will go so very far. But when a high end fashion model comes home - what chores does mum make her do? Take out the garbage, clean the toilet, wash the dog? And what would be your least favourite chore?

10:45
codie young:
thanks really means a lot. haha chores well I do stuff to help the family out. I don't mind taking the bin out or doing the dishes or washing the clothes etc. because I very rarely get a chance to do washing when I'm away just like I dont mind making dinner as it's super exciting to have a fridge full of food let alone a fridge at all! oh and my least favourite would be washing the dog we have a big chocolate labrador and he is really hard to wash as he just runs around in mud and dirt all day!

Do you think you will go back and finish school?

10:46
codie young:

All the international travel and glamour of being a model must be great, but once you have had enojugh of that lifestyle, do you think you might consider a career in fashion in another role, such as fashion reporter/editor?

10:49
codie young:
nope I don't thinks so. I want to go to art school once I have finished. and it really isn't glamorous like everyone thinks it is. it's a lot of hard work and long hours!

Has your wardrobe doubled in size? Do you get given your clothes? And what's your favourite piece of clothing in your wardrobe?

10:52
codie young:
yes my wardrobe is massive now!!!!!!!!! because I am constantly buy new stuff everywhere I go. sometimes we get given clothes, but when we are given clothes it is normally as trade, which means we are being given clothes instead of money which I don't like I would much rather have the money and buy things that I want. I have a lot of favourites I have a couple long skirts that I love as well as this amazing vintage coat from paris that I love

10:52

Would your friends and family say you are a daredevil or that you like to play it safe? What's the most exciting thing you have ever done off the catwalk and away from the cameras?

10:54
codie young:
haha I definitally think if your going to do something go all out, I'm not a dare devil but I don't play it safe either. I'm not sure actually haha

Pretty sure I saw her walking in a long, dark coat with her agent or someone in Kings Cross around about 6pm before the Myer show...very unobtrusive but gorgeous!

Here are some backstage and runway pics from the Myer show.

Seriously in awe with the Neil Barrett ad. It's just a portion of her face yet she catches your eye. Can't get enough of that strong gaze.

The shot of the male model from the campaign was taken backstage at the recent show, so I assume hers was too. I wonder if they had to pay her?
