Crash #49 : Emma Watson

i thought Emma looked like Gareth Pugh's little sister on the cover. and i liked the edge this picture managed to capture.
I share your opinion. The editorial is a failure in making Emma look appealing to people who don't fancy Harry Potter. She's close to 20 years old now but those shots do make her look half that age.
i'm quite sure this editorial isn't about appealing to masses. (it's too raw and experimental) nor is it about exploiting her Harry Potter heyday. i think what is great about this edit is that it doesn't really speculate on Emma's stardom factor (if any) rather than portraying some potential her face has (and i was really surprised to find that in her). from sober softness to tough look... Emma seems to be a pretty convincing editorial star in the making.

^for the experimental side ... here is Crash story ...

Crash was the new magazine launched and co-founded by Armelle Leturcq (art historian - specialized in feminist art - and art critic) and Franck Perrin (art critic and curator - with a passion for Gilles Deleuze back in the 90s) in the late 90s ... after the contemporary art magazine the couple launched in 1992 : Bloc Notes came to an end (french art press is very very small market and ruled by only 2-3 magazines)
Bloc Notes was launched the same year Purple Prose (Olivier Zahm and Elein Fleiss) and Documents sur l'art (Nicolas Bourriaud and Eric Troncy) were launched ...
Purple Prose is now Purple Fashion (only Olivier Zahm remains ... Elein Fleiss' doing something else), Documents sur l'art doesn't exist anymore (Eric Troncy is co-director of Le Consortium, art critic for several magazines - including Numéro and Nicolas Bourriaud is now working in London at the Tate, after having ruled Palais de Tokyo with Jérôme Sans)

all this story (i feel like repeating ... ouch i feel like an old papi) to say that Crash has still this experimental side because its co-founders are both very into contemporary art and thoughts ...
but since recently they are very into celebs they try to turn into indie personalities to remain in their magazine spirit ... I don't get if putting celebs on their cover is because they need money (Crash has gone through a long period of lacking $$ ... they didn't pay most of their contributors ... i don't know how they are doing now) or is because they feel something for the present climax ...

anyway ...

what is funny is that one of these people recently told that now art was mostly in fashion magazines than in art magazines ....
