is it better to have something custom made or something store bought?... i still dont get it. i guess for the brandname people, its better to be store bought, but if you have something custom, then you could put your own ideas into the piece right?... though some of my friends say that custom made is stupid. or are they just saying that? btw which one is more expensive?

Hmm.. I'm afraid I don't have any experience with custom made clothes (save the ones my Mom made growing up which were definitely less expensive :p). Sorry I can't help, but out of curiousity... what are your friend's reasons for saying it's stupid? Seems like it would be fun!

Welcome to tFS :flower:

well oneof my friends saidit stupid i think because she is obsessed with brands..... but i guess i want my style clothes now cause #1. i dont like to dress like other people, and #2 because i already have a lot of like.... regular brands of clothes (EX: ralph lauren, tommy, etc.)

but i dont want to be called cheap or something for getting stuff made. so i was just wondering if its considered bad, good, or doesnt matter.

Maybe you should define "custom made". Is this like Oscar De La Renta is designing a custom made gown? Or more like, homegirl down the street is stitching me up an outfit. This could mean a lot of different things really.

Plus, I just want to say that I am a label loyalist myself to some degree mainly because quality clothing is important to me. However, I also enjoy buying stuff from grassroots designers who vend clothes at music festivals and have their own websites. Again, the emphasis for me isn't about labels but the quality and integrity of the label...whether it is Louis Vuitton or my sister who makes applique skirts and sells them on her website.

Anyway, to answer your question, custom made clothes are generally more expensive than you might think. The seamstress puts a lot of time and energy into custom handmade pieces so you are going to pay for that in the end.

If you like to and can afford it go for custom made, the clothes fit so nice. It's cheaper then most labels, but it's not cheap. I have had my coat 'replica' sewed - I had this coat from mother from the 60ties and I looved it soo much, but it got simply old after 5 years wearing by me, so I had it simply copied. The sewing costed 200€ and the fabric 180€.

Totally go for it :flower: Who cares what the others think? Sounds like you really want something personal. I say go with it ;)

It's more expensive to make something yourself or having it tailor-made, compared to buying it at H&M...

But if if it's well-made in good quality it'll last a long time...

If you are good at what you do, or go to a good tailor, it'll be better quality compared to any designer such as Prada, Gucci or many other fashion labels. And often a lot cheaper.

Adding: Tailoring is a craft though... You will spend some time adjusting patterns, fitting, sewing... And pressing. You will spend a lot of time ironing if you're a tailor... It's really paramount.

I love custom made clothes in theory because I have my own very specific ideas of what I want.

Reality, though, is not that easy.

No matter how well you communicate your ideas to the tailor and how skilled the tailor is, dressmaking is an art not just a skill...even if it fits your body perfectly, 2millimeters extra here and there as well as tiny variables such as thread hue and lining texture could make or break the entire outfit and you could end up not wearing it. Many friends, even those with much experience with tailors, have had similar experiences. Now I only ask dressmakers I can bug day and night about these details and go to numerous fittings (i.e. friends&relatives!), or whose impeccable taste I trust completely (if I can find anyone). Just be aware that a very real risk is there, often at a high price too.

In that sense, you know exactly what you're getting with store-bought items.

^ Absolutely. It is partly art as well as skill.
