Just realized I corrected Dara's bust measurement to 21 instead of 31. Pardon my mistake :flower:

i cant help but laugh, i've followed her on tumblr for a while and her shoe size is definitely not an 8.5, shes said so herself before... but im so excited she's finally signed!

Her shoe size is now listed as 11 and hair is listed as black, which is definitely more accurate  The bust measurement is also fixed.

I've been waiting for her to get signed for AGES so I could start her a thread... so happy for her that it finally happened!

What do you do and why do you do it? Sometimes I stand in front of cameras, sometimes I stand behind them. London's clubs are closing down at immeasurable rate, how do you think New York retains an amazing nightlife spirit? Americans love debauchery. What is the most exciting thing happening in New York's underground scene? Trans girls communicating, collaborating, doing creatively fulfilling work, and getting paid for it above ground. Do you think clubbing can ever be political? Anything can be political. What would your dream night consist of? Friends, fab tunes, and free boxes of Cheez-Its at the club.

A new week and a new crush of the rising stars of fashion. This time, we look into the trans world.

No doubt, trans models have been breaking conformity in the fashion world this year and this week, we shed light to the model Dara, (@dara._) who is the prime figure of non-binary beauty.

Being a transgender model, Dara's career is one that very few expected, especially as an unsigned model. But she rose to fame and created buzzes all over town when she made her runway debut at Marc Jacobs during New York Fashion Week.

Dressed in an Amy Whitehouse-esque hairstyle or what she calls “a Debi Mazar ’60s look”, she has certainly left the fashion world in awe (us included!).

Who’s this model?
With a background in fashion journalism, the 23-year-old unsigned model from California has never thought of being in fashion shows.

On a feature on Vogue.com, she says, "Fashion writing was what I was doing beforehand, but then I realized I loved the visual aspect of things."

Ever since her Marc Jacobs debut, the runway rookie is the buzz of New York City for her stunning beauty.

What she did?
No one ever says you have to be represented by an agency to walk for a show and Dara proved her point when she got herself cast for the Marc Jacobs Fall ’17 show as one of four non-gender conforming model who hit the runway.

Runway aside, she was also chosen as the cover star for Candy magazine, the first transversal style magazine, by her good friend and guest editor of the issue, Hari Nef.

Her involvement in an eclectic cast for the Helmut Lang’s revival ad campaign is also her other step forward into the fashion world to represent the non-binary community in fashion.

Why is she the one to watch?
Now, Dara continues to pursue projects she shares the same values with and working with designers who appreciate her existence rather than being magnified as the token trans-model.

And Dara is also serving us street style realness as we continue to catch glimpses of her fashion endeavours on Instagram.

How an Unsigned Model Stole the Show at Marc Jacobs
FEBRUARY 25, 2017 7:40 AM by JANELLE OKWODU
You don’t have to be signed to an agency to make your way into New York Fashion Week’s biggest show. This season, model Dara made her debut alongside industry vets, including Hanne Gaby Odiele and Jamie Bochert, at Marc Jacobs’s Fall 2017 presentation without so much as inking a single contract. Sporting an Amy Winehouse-esque beehive and plenty of attitude, Dara made a distinct impression, prompting editors to ask: Who’s that girl? For the runway rookie, the experience was a dream. “It was so amazing and such a fun team,” said Dara moments after making her walk. “I’d never really done anything like that before and as an unsigned model it’s just so major to even have that opportunity.”
A self-described “fashion geek,” the 23-year-old grew up watching industry documentaries and immersing herself in the behind the scenes process. A fan the classics, she admired image-makers such as photographer Antonio Lopez and models like his theatrical muse Pat Cleveland. Studying fashion journalism in college, Dara initially sought to write about the collections rather than be in them. “Fashion writing was what I was doing beforehand, but then I realized I loved the visual aspect of things,” says Dara. “I got more into graphic design, styling, and everything that goes into creating those images.”
Assisting stylist Ian Bradley and building a portfolio, Dara stepped in front of the camera after being tapped by close friend Hari Nef to front her guest-edited issue of Candy magazine. “Hari and I have been really good friends for years; we met on the Internet through our mutual interest in fashion and bonded,” she says. “She has been amazing, and has given me an opportunity and allowed me a platform for working within this industry. That issue was a manifestation of everything I love in fashion. It was seeing a bunch of the things that we’d always talked about become real.”
The magazine attracted the attention of Jacobs and casting director Anita Bitton, who filled the show with faces that reflected New York in the early ’80s and a more modern landscape all at once. In a landmark runway moment, Dara was one of four non-gender conforming models featured within the show, joining peers including Casil McArthur, Stav Strashko, and Avie Acosta. “I love that it wasn’t just one of us who was chosen as a token trans model,” says Dara, “A bunch of different people came together to create something powerful.”
Though still in the process of searching for the right agency, Dara appreciates how far she has already come. “I hope to continue styling, but modeling is great because you get to meet everyone and it puts you at the center of everything that is happening,” she says. “Just being able to go through the atelier and seeing them at work sewing everything and taking the time to pin things on me. I still geek out over it.”

Dara
“I had a day off on the Sunday night before the show, so I was chilling at home napping, being lazy, maybe going to clean,” said the 23-year-old unsigned model Dara, who spends her days assisting the stylist Ian Bradley. “Then I checked my Instagram DMs.” What she found was a message from Marc Jacobs’ team saying they’d just left her a voicemail and would like her to come in for a casting—never mind the fact that Dara didn’t set out to walk any shows this season and doesn’t even have an agent. Within the hour, though, Dara hauled herself to the designer’s studio on Spring Street and, after running into Alek Wek, found her photo already on the casting board, and already wearing Marc Jacobs: it was the cover Dara shot for Candy magazine, one of ten featuring trans models in an issue guest-edited by Hari Nef. It’s thanks to Nef, in part, that Dara's grown so comfortable in the city after moving to Brooklyn from California just six months ago: she’s known the model-actress for almost four years now, since “I met basically all my friends on the internet,” Dara said with a laugh. Next up is getting signed with an agency, though Dara knows perhaps better than most that’s not always exactly easy. “I've been talking to agencies, but it's difficult because people see me as a risk, even though I don't really see myself as a risky move,” she said. Not that that's stopped Dara. Instead, she's been carefully pursuing projects she cares about, working for forward-thinking designers like the London-based artist Claire Barrow and those who operate in a way similar to Jacobs. “I didn't feel like I was being tokenized in any way or my existence there was being magnified, other than just being there to wear clothes and walk down the runway and stand outside the pictures and have my picture taken,” Dara said of Jacobs' Fall 2017 show. “I didn't feel like it was this message. It was just a seamlessly inclusive environment, and it was just normal.”

dara allen speaks out about never feeling limited
By i-D Staff photos by Inez and Vinoodh

“I’ve never felt limited by anything that people told me was limiting... It was the greatest gift my parents could have given me.”

“I’ve never really looked at myself as one thing, changing into something else. I’ve always had instincts about life and myself and what I felt was right. Even if that didn’t go along with what everyone else said to me. I’ve never really made strong definitions about where I stop and start, and who I was and who I am and who I’m going to be. Fashion gave me a language. Fashion saved my life. It allowed me a way into other people that I have come to love – my friends and the people I hold dear. It was this thing that we all had in common.

My dad is such a geek about what I do. He’ll go to work and brag to his to co-workers about it. It’s really hilarious. To me, this is such a big deal, but for him, it’s like glitzy and shiny and funny and exciting. Both of my parents have always been very supportive. They’ve always let me do what I wanted and listened to me when I’ve said I wanted things. My parents hated these crazy outfits that I’d want to wear to school, so I used to come out and parade around and be like, look at my great outfit. And then they’d be like, ‘No, you have to go change’. But they just got used to it and figured it out. The most important thing that my parents did for me was to create a foundation of confidence and strength in whatever it is I wanted to do, even if they didn’t always agree with it. I’ve never felt limited by anything that people told me was limiting... It was the greatest gift my parents could have given me.”
