In the year 1752, Joshua and Naomi Collins, with young son Barnabas, set sail from Liverpool, England to start a new life in America. But even an ocean was not enough to escape the mysterious curse that has plagued their family. Two decades pass and Barnabas (Johnny Depp) has the world at his feet—or at least the town of Collinsport, Maine. The master of Collinwood Manor, Barnabas is rich, powerful and an inveterate playboy…until he makes the grave mistake of breaking the heart of Angelique Brouchard (Eva Green). A witch, in every sense of the word, Angelique dooms him to a fate worse than death: turning him into a vampire, and then burying him alive.

Two centuries later, Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972. He returns to Collinwood Manor to find that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin. The dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family have fared little better, each harboring their own dark secrets. Matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (Michelle Pfeiffer) has called upon live-in psychiatrist, Dr. Julia Hoffman (Helena Bonham Carter), to help with her family troubles.

Also residing in the manor is Elizabeth's ne'er-do-well brother, Roger Collins (Jonny Lee Miller); her rebellious teenage daughter Carolyn Stoddard (Chloe Moretz); and Roger's precocious 10-year-old son, David Collins (Gulliver McGrath). The mystery extends beyond the family, to caretaker Willie Loomis, played by Jackie Earle Haley, and David's new nanny, Victoria Winters, played by Bella Heathcote.

Tim Burton is directing and producing Dark Shadows from a screenplay by Seth Grahame-Smith, story by John August and Grahame-Smith, based on the television series created by Dan Curtis. The behind-the-scenes creative team includes cinematographer Bruno Delbonnel, Oscar®-winning production designer Rick Heinrichs (Sleepy Hollow), Oscar®-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood (Alice in Wonderland) and editor Chris Lebenzon (Alice in Wonderland). The score will be composed by Danny Elfman.

Dark Shadows is being filmed entirely in England, both at Pinewood Studios and on location and stars Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Helena Bonham Carter, Eva Green, Jackie Earle Haley, Jonny Lee Miller, Bella Heathcote, Chloe Moretz, and newcomer Gulliver McGrath.

i was really excited about this till i just saw the trailer.....awful. seems he's turned what was actually a piece of drama into a silly austin powers-esque slapstick dullard. i was really looking forward to something akin to sleepy hollow or those gothic horrors from the 60's and early 70's but this is awfully disappointing. aesthetically,it looks gorgeous as ever but i can't take the narrative at all.

has tim lost his edge a bit? remake after remake is all he's done this decade.

^I thought the original tv show was supposed to be campy...? I´d say this maintain that quality. It reminds me of Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands, like Burton is returning to his beginnings :)

I too thought the trailer was awful but I still have hope. And I will definitely be seeing this in theatres. I feel like this may be one of those films where the trailer does it no justice.

Building the hype ahead of its May 11th release, “Dark Shadows” has just revealed nine new character posters.

Included in the new round of promo posters are Johnny Depp as Barnabas Collins, Eva Green as Angelique Bouchard, Gulliver McGrath as David Collins, Helena Bonham Carter as Julia Hoffman, Bella Heathcote as Victoria Winters, Jackie Earle Haley as Willie Loomis, Jonny Lee Miller as Roger Collins, Michelle Pfeiffer as Elizabeth Collins Stoddard, and Chloe Moretz as Caroline Stoddard.

Playing on the family aspect of the plotline, each poster has the tagline “Strange is Relative,” and they certainly do fit the part.

“Dark Shadows” is about an imprisoned vampire, Barnabas Collins, who is set free and returns to his ancestral home, where his dysfunctional descendants are in need of his protection.

camp but not grotesquely silly. it was as much fun as it was dramatic but it never had this level of cheesy, not even ironic, humour. which is really what broke the spell for me in that trailer. i was expecting more of a drama and since this is coming from the vision of tim burton perhaps even a do-up.
