JEN KAO
“Easy dramatics. Unexpected combinations. Mobility..." Jen Kao describes her second collection through the eyes of an artist, which makes sense considering that the designer studied mixed media long before she thought to translate her intricate compositions from canvas to clothing. “As garments are 3D, it’s natural for me to build on them as I would a sculpture or collage, piecing things together, mixing fabrics and materials.” Based in New York, by way of L.A. and Kansas City, Kao's spring collection, “The Think Machine VS The Art of War,” was inspired by “a girl who grew up to champion all the dreams that her little boy counterparts had--fighter pilot, spy, astronaut, cowboy…” Tomboyish silhouettes with flirty, sportif details like hand-pleated piping, such as Kao’s favorite piece, a snap placket onesie, will be presented against an arresting backdrop of Ryan McGinley photographs of Darla Baker. “It’s not intentionally feminist. It’s more about an individual wanting what they want and getting it.” Something Kao seems to know a thing or two about.
