Beckham quits as England soccer captain

Sunday Jul 2 20:16 AEST
David Beckham has quit as England captain after almost six years in the job in the wake of the World Cup quarter-final defeat by Portugal.
The England midfielder, apparently on the verge of tears, told a news conference:
"I feel the time is right to pass on the armband as we enter a new era under (new coach) Steve McClaren."
Beckham said he would continue playing for England.

"I have lived the dream," said Beckham.
"I'm extremely proud to have worn the armband and been captain of England, for that I will always be grateful."

awwwwwwwwww, this man is great! He played his heart out and England deserved to win against Portugal

Now that is just sad and it shows how high his hopes were for England at this World Cup!:D

it's not surprising that he quit as capitan, like he said it's the beginning of a new era in English football. I expect to see him in 2 years at the Euro championship but I don't think he'll be around for the world cup in 2010.

Thats sad. Heartbreaking, but i think terry will do a good job

I can´t believe that David quit as a captain. He shouldn´t have done this. He played well on WC.
