Beckham recalled to England squad

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/internationals/6694743.stm

Former captain David Beckham has been named in the England squad for the first time since the 2006 World Cup. Coach Steve McClaren's U-turn means Beckham, 32, is set to start Friday's friendly against Brazil followed by the Euro 2008 qualifier in Estonia.

Fit-again Newcastle striker Michael Owen returns in place of Wayne Rooney, who is suspended for the Estonia game. Reading's Nicky Shorey, David Bentley of Blackburn and Chelsea's Joe Cole are also included in the 26-man squad.

And Manchester United forward Alan Smith also figures after scoring the opening goal in the England B win over Albania.

Tottenham winger Aaron Lennon is selected despite picking up a knock in that 3-1 victory at Burnley's Turf Moor. But the Spurs midfielder could find his opportunities limited with Beckham back in the fold.

Head coach Steve McClaren told BBC Sport: "Everyone knows David's attributes and he's a big-game player who can help us win in Estonia. "We've a very important game in Estonia, we need to win it and it is a squad that can win it."

Real Madrid midfielder Beckham last played for England in the World Cup quarter-final defeat against Portugal last June, after which he resigned the captaincy, and has not been selected in any of McClaren's nine previous squads.

McClaren also played down reports that senior members of his squad did not want Beckham recalled. But he refused to be drawn on whether the former captain's move to Major League Soccer in the summer would hinder his international prospects in the long term.

"Everybody's professional and we've a squad that will blend together that will get us a result and I'm sure everyone will welcome David back," he added. But all I'm thinking about is the next two games and we're not looking beyond that. The priority is the next 10 days. Obviously his form has been excellent at Real Madrid and he can help us win in Estonia. Beyond that we'll cross that bridge when we come to it."

Beckham is set to move to LA Galaxy at the end of the Spanish season and is confident he can become a fixture in England's plans again.

"I'll be a lot fitter (playing in LA), still as fit as I am now, maybe more fit," the midfielder told BBC Radio Five Live ahead of the squad announcement. The training will be difficult in America with the humidity so I still feel I'd be able to play for England."

^ As a football fan I kinda disagree with him being recalled, He doesn't deserve a first team place anyway.....But as Im going to the match on Friday I'll look forward to seeing him play again.

^^I so dont agree with that!
He most certainly deserves to be called back!He is in the best form of his life at the moment, the way he played at the RM games is very admirable and like Cappelo said it would be just silly to ignore him.

And then there is the other thing; He is simply the most porfessional and disciplined foobtaller out there. He was droped from the team and he took it with such grace and instead of being angry he invested his enegry in training. And now not only did Cappelo call him back but McClaren aswell,he proved them all that he is first and mostly a footballer.

And after disastrous games Englad hve been palying, they definitely need his foot.Hopefully he will be able to help them, and if he dosent, then the gold old English nation will have again someone to blame for their failure  so everyone will be happy.

Oh come on, hes only had 11 or so starts with real madrid this season, yes his form has got better but theres no way he deserves to be in the england first team on 11 performances only.

Im not a Beckham hater just a massive football fan and I think Lennon, Bentley or Pennant are the way forward for England. Beckham is past his peak and I personnaly think that its a step backwards for the team.

After seeing him play at the world cup his pace is totally gone. He can score from freekicks only. Yes his crossings is amazing, but Im afraid nowadays hes a one trick pony, that trick being a good one though.

Saying that it wouldn't surprise me if he scores on Friday, (if he plays)...

from a freekick of course :)

Sarant ...Ive just been having the same conversation with my football mad husband and we both said that he will most definitely score on friday!! What I wonder is now he has been recalled to England and after all going so well at Real....Will he really want to go and play 2nd rate football at Galaxy - compared to the higher standard that he could continue playing at - for at least another couple of years longer in Europe. Is he is going to the US a couple of years too early!!
Enjoy Wembley!!:)

^^It will be a bit off but he must be prepared for it,he knows that football is not huge in US.And he actually seems to cant wait to go to US.

I am watching Real Madrid vs Deportivo now and David plays amazing,he assisted 2 goals, absoloutely AMAZING!Whoever is watching this game and still thinks he dosent deserve to be re-called,then i have nothing to say.

He will be in great help to England in his currect form.

His assist are amazing but it make England a one dimensional team, meaning when we play diiferent teams all they have to do is to defend corners and crosses in the air. We didn't score many in the world cup due to other teams knowing this strengh. If he plays on Friday then I hope hes a sub.

If he does score I for one will be happy, any england goal is something to cheer about and as I said before Im not beckham hater

^^ Thanks for posting the great article, Jam1e. Frankly, I'd prefer to watch a football game than someone shopping. :innocent: I wonder how long they'll survive a bi-continental lifestyle.

^^Well to be fair Daily Mail never had anything nice to say about Victoria,so of course they are exaggareting once again  her show will contain much more than shopping.

SomethingElse: No prob hunn:blush:....yes it's going to be interesting to see how the move pans out and if you guys change over to English Soccer!!
One thing for sure is that things were alot different for David when the US deal was agreed....I really think he still has at least a couple more seasons playing at a higher level in Europe before downgrading to LA Galaxy!

Emil
:Obviously we won't know what the content of Victoria's Reality Show will be until it is screened -but to be honest I for one was hoping for something with a bit more substance than Sex shop scenes, being pulled up by the police etc etc! Surely they could of come up with something different that is edgyier and classier than the usual reality format?!

^^Well like you said we wont know until we see it,but NBCs public statment said it will be about her new life in LA and her buisness into fashion.etc
So we dont know if its the "usual reality format".

Did anyone hear his radio interview? He really seems content with going to US.
